If you feel no resistance—like when the road changes from an incline to a flat—shift to a higher (harder) gear until there’s some light pushback again. If you’ve got osteoarthritis of the knee—genetics, injury, and participation in highimpact activities are key causes—you likely rely on meds and physical therapy to ease the ache. But if you’re still in pain, a new study from the Annals of Family Medicine suggests that prolotherapy may be worth a try. Patients who received this treatment, which entails injecting sugar water (dextrose) into and around the knee joint, reported significantly less pain and stiffness than those who had placebo injections or only did athome exercises. Although prolotherapy is somewhat controversial, this finding builds on previous research that shows the modality helps people with the condition.
