You’re trying to be smart about your diet. You’re exercising. But for some reason the scale isn’t budging, or the weight refuses to come off as fast as you’d like. “A weight-loss problem means there’s a problem in your fat cells,” explains nutrition scientist and exercise physiologist David Plourdé, Ph.D., founder of The Plourdé Institute. In his interdisciplinary, science-based weight-loss program, he helps people increase the activity of hormone-sensitive lipase, an enzyme that breaks down fat. New research finds that proper hydration doesn’t just keep you healthy, it may affect how tough you find your workout. For example, in a study in The American Journal of Sports Science, endurance athletes found their competitions less strenuous when they had enough H2O in their systems— and had a greater sense of well-being during events. SNACK ON A HEALTHY HANDFUL. When it comes to healthy snacking, a new preliminary study suggests that not all calories are created equal. In a 12-week randomized study, 52 overweight and obese subjects were placed on a 500-calorie deficit diet and were assigned to either a portioncontrolled pistachio snack or pretzel snack group. The pistachio group included a daily snack of 240 calories (about 75 pistachios) and the pretzel group, a 2-ounce snack totaling 220 calories. Because both groups lost weight, this research suggests that controlled portions of pistachios can be included in a healthy diet, even for those who are managing their weight. To fight “gotta-haveit-now” hankerings, tamp down your levels of ghrelin, the so-called appetite hormone your body pumps out to remind you that you haven’t eaten in a while and that it’s time to refuel. After a meal, ghrelin production drops and usually stays low for hours while you digest. It’s the counterpart to the hormone leptin, which your body releases to signal when you’re full and that it’s time to put down your fork. Keep ghrelin levels in check by getting plenty of sleep and daily exercise.
