The tiny house movement is rapidly gaining momentum in New Zealand, and it has been a great option for newlyweds Kate and Willem van den Bergh.
A conventional home in Auckland was out of their price range, so they thought outside the box, first exploring container homes, then turning their attention to the small and simple.
Four months and $80,000 later, their 30m² house – with a footprint of just 18m² – was constructed, ready to be moved onto a plot of land the couple purchased on Waiheke Island.
“It was affordable and a stepping stone to get out of renting,” says Kate, 34, who kept costs down by buying end-of-line materials, negotiating deals and doing all the finishing work.
