Was my great honour to drive Sir Stirling and his wife Susie around the 2014 Goodwood Revival in my Austin Seven Paul Huish I met him at Festival of Speed when I was in my marshals overalls. His wife introduced me to him, as if I had no idea who he was! He chatted to me for ages about how he was always so appreciative of the race marshals. The basis for this project was an already modified Cortina, which was fitted with a poorly Essex V6 when Norman bought it. Norman sourced the engine from a scrapped Ford Focus ST170 before teaming it with a Ford Sierra Type-9 five-speed gearbox and a Tranex limited slip differential. The engine is fed by Jenvey throttle bodies and controlled by an Emerald ECU, which also drives the cooling fans. Steering is via rack and pinion sourced from a Ford Escort and suspension is mostly Ford Capri 2.8i with a number of Retroford parts thrown in for good measure including a twin master cylinder pedal box adjustable for brake bias. Our classic car enjoyment is a bit curtailed at the moment, at least as far as driving them is concerned. That said, recently I did see a fellow driving along our high street in his white MGB, roof down, and it gladdened my heart. I’m sure he was driving for some essential reason, and a classic car can do the job as well as any other. It got me thinking. Deprivation from a car culture we know and love is bad enough for us here in 2020, although we all understand the reasons for it, and happily accept that we must follow the rules for the good of all. After her successful first mission to France her second began on June 7, 1944, the day after D-Day. She flew from Tempsford and parachuted into France, near Limoges, to set up a new network with local resistance groups. Three days later Violette was on a trip with a resistance leader, known as Anastasie, when they encountered German forces. A gun battle took place. Violette was captured, but helped ensure that Anastasie could escape. After capture, Violette was brutally tortured in Fresnes prison in Paris before being deported by to Germany. She gave up no information. During the journey the train was attacked by British aircraft and Violette and another female prisoner took the opportunity, at great personal risk, to take water to the male prisoners. As the storm clouds gathered a few months ago, we reluctantly shut the door on the workshop for a while to rethink our projects. I had long been confident my CX would have been rebuilt in time to drive to the now postponed Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration Show but… good sense prevailed in a world where we’ve all had to reconsider personal and professional priorities. Mini-mile Maxi A 1981 Austin Maxi 2 1750L was sold online with H&H Classics. The sale was conducted on April 29. With just 8700 warranted miles on the clock, the car comes from an Austin enthusiast’s collection and was in storage from 1998 until 2012 after the death of the first owner. Pedal-powered Burlen Ltd has purchased the entire J40 pedal car spares business from industry legend Roy Halford. Over 30,000 J40 pedal cars were originally built and, today, even tired examples in need of restoration can fetch upwards of £2000. Good luck driving a BMC ADO16 through this part of Birmingham today. Christ Church Buildings (left), locally known as Galloway’s Corner, is now buried under the pedestrianised Victoria Square. This magnificent late 19th century terrace on New Street was demolished in 1970. There’s more of the changing face of Brum beyond Pinfold Street on the right – that’s Birmingham New Street station being rebuilt in the distance. Rather horribly, as it turned out. Our ADO16 is a shiny Morris 1100 MkI and would have been almost new here, as would the sole Ford Cortina MkII lurking at the top of Pinfold Street. Honestly? It drives like a really well put together Cortina MkI. Such is Norman’s attention to minimalist detail, the cabin looks and feels standard, yet fresh. Turn the key and there’s life immediately, but even the exhaust note doesn’t give the game away. Slide the Type-9 ‘box into gear and the car feels instantly nimble. The rebuilt original gauges work exactly as you’d expect as we gain pace without a hint of ‘home brew’ in the way this thing drives. This is no cobbled together monster – it’s Ford’s greatest hits, brought together beautifully. Plant your right foot and the exhaust bark is accompanied by a kick in the back of your seat. During the night of December 16, 1943, a large number of aircraft from 20 squadrons attacked Berlin. Bourn’s 97 Squadron ran into trouble, as they approached home. The runway had become fogbound and landing would be very difficult, if not impossible. In an effort to get the bombers down safely, all manner of tactics were used to move the fog and illuminate the runways. Some aircraft managed to divert to other bases in Lincolnshire and Norfolk, but many tried to wait it out. The result was a critical loss of fuel and subsequently several aircraft crashed in the dense fog. As admin of the Volvo Owners UK Facebook page I was constantly told my V60 wasn’t ‘proper’. My mind was set on a ‘red block’ Volvo and when I saw this 240 parked up a few streets away, I knew I had to have her. With the Minor finally back in the PC workshop, progress has been rapid. With so many sub-assemblies pre-built, I’ve been able to simply fit parts rather than restore or rebuild them as I go. My first task was to strip the old rear suspension and continue cleaning the underside before applying Rustbuster Techshield underbody wax to the rear of the car. Once this hardened, it was a relatively straightforward job to fit the new seven leaf rear springs with Polybush performance bushes, then drop the rebuilt axle into place atop a set of lowering blocks before tying the whole lot together with extra-long U bolts. At the end of March, the Gay Classic Car Group (gccg.org.uk) put on a Fix-it Weekend to help its members keep their cars in rude health during the lockdown. Helping to organise the project was Mark Wells, who comments: ‘Fix-it Weekend was our way of keeping our hobby alive while also staying in touch with our members in a bid to keep them sane. The weekend consisted of three key areas, the simplest being an opportunity for members to share pictures on our social media channels, of their before and after pics, once they’d fixed their car. Am I the only person to have noticed that the Austin A40, XOE 778 ( PC , May 2020), is missing the top bar of its radiator grille? Citroën 2CV While in Rostock (eastern Germany) recently and walking between the city centre and the train station, I spotted this beautifully kept 2CV Charleston. I have not seen one on the road for perhaps 30 years – In left-hand drive configuration and with three front seats, it never caught on. Hillman Hunter and Alfa Romeo Alfasud It’s rare to see examples of either of these in a yard now; a mouldy late Sixties Hunter alongside an early Seventies Alfasud, both looking almost rust-free somehow! Most of us, I’m willing to bet, have been using spare time during lockdown to tidy our garages. In some cases, I’m sure, to a level those garages have never known before. 1 Family relics These blackout shrouds were fitted to PC reader, Charlie Penfold’s dad’s car in WWII. Danny’s mission was to restore them. 2 A long soak required After deconstructing the shrouds (one a three-slot mask, the other single-slot) they were soaked in a rust converting solution for 24 hours. 3 Glass glue fixed The single slot mask had a lense that had shattered.
