WITH just over a decade until the first end-of-sale deadline for diesel HGVs, there is not a single HGV-dedicated electric charging or hydrogen filling point on Britain’s main trunk roads. The fact has been highlighted by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which last week issued a blunt appraisal of the Government’s efforts to support the transition of heavy road transport to zero-emissions. “The market is shackled by the absence of infrastructure and lack of plan,” it said. “With just over a decade until the first deadline for the UK’s diesel HGV workhorses… lack of infrastructure makes it impossible for operators to contemplate investments to decarbonise their fleets, putting critical CO2 savings of up to 21.1 million tonnes a year at risk.” From 2035, all new HGVs below…
