International borders are still more or less closed to Americans, so there’s never been a better time to go on a cross-country road trip. Staying in your car is unquestionably safer (and less expensive) than air travel, but it’s not entirely risk-free. “Per the CDC, take precautions during stops for gas, food, or the restroom. Mask up and wash your hands frequently,” says Dr. Teena Chopra, an infectious disease specialist and a professor at Detroit’s Wayne State University. “Avoid crowded areas, and carry a hand sanitizer just in case.”
