In the April 1994 issue of American Patchwork & Quilting® magazine, the editorial staff asked readers to nominate their favorite quilt shops. We heard about more than 300 shops from across the United States and Canada, and the nominations were whittled down to 10. In the fall of 1995, the first issue Quilt Sampler® went on sale and featured 10 shops, 10 exclusive quilt patterns, and a bonus traveler’s guide to all 386 nominated shops. Quilt Gallery, on page 86, is back for an encore; the shop was featured in the premier issue in 1995—and has been in business since 1983! For a long time, Barbara Gillespie had two dreams—to open a quilt shop and to move back to her hometown. In 2012, both dreams came true. “Summerland holds a special place in my heart, and to have a quilt shop in this town means the world to me,” she says. Her great-grandfather was among the first settlers, and she has fond memories of spending summers with her grandparents picking cherries.
