Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE), the first office of its kind, began its operation of the Public Building Center on Apr. 1. Approved by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on Mar. 24, the institute is directly responsible for the construction of educational facilities, previously overseen by the Architecture & Urban Research Institute. FHHH FRIENDS is an architectural firm run by three friends (Han Seungjae, Han Yangkyu, and Yoon Hanjin). United under the name FHHH FRIENDS, they come together as one with their shared passion and sense of humour, but they also work on their given individual projects with their own respective methods and means. ‘Renovation’ is a portmanteau of ‘re’ and ‘innovation’; it signifies an innovative process that causes the object of its focus to depart entirely from its past. Recently, many spaces have undergone renovation. Buildings might have years left in them yet, but might require a redefining of their use. At times this may be considered more economically viable than constructing anew, but fundamentally it seems have resulted from an underlying emotional need to showcase an accumulation of time. Sanyang Brewery was a timber frame brewery built in 1944, which Mungyeong City Government bought and transformed into a multi-purpose cultural complex. Modern buildings as renovation projects commissioned by public offices pose many inherent challenges. Sky House, built in Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam, is a house that actively incorporates natural elements into the inner space through a centered-void and terraces. Restriction-Generated Functional Formulas for Housing The floor area ratio, a calculation system to secure the largest building area, is one of the inevitable challenges and greatest restrictions for architects. In this game, they should present various strategies to design a building and its supplementary spaces against countless regulations. In which direction should such a solution be developed? Designing a floor plan or an exterior volume for building by computer software developed in light of a huge amount of data and algorithms is not very astonishing idea. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) and the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) published the Korean Design Standard Glossary, a summary of conflicting expressions of construction standards in architecture, civil engineering, environment, agriculture and forestry. Individually managed by various professional institutes and associations so far, the Korean Design Standard came to be controlled by KICT when a design standard code system was unified in 2016. The integration of systems, however, with the many conflicting definitions of terms across each field has often confused users. This glossary is published with the intention of enhancing the mutual understanding of professionals by unifying design standards and terminology for a Korean Construction Specification between various government departments. A Confined and Narrow Site The site was located near the crossroads of Sanggye Elementary School in Nowon-gu. To the south, there is a bustling commercial area facing Sanggye-ro road, whereas to the north there is a residential area in which multi-family houses are concentrated. The area was only 211m2 , and an L-shape, where an approximately 4m-wide expanse followed the road to turn inward lengthways for about 13m. The zone that turned inward was surrounded on all sides by five different buildings. In many respects, the site conditions were unfavourable. When I first visited the site, one that seemed to have been vacant for a long time, there was a temporary building dedicated to sanitation workers to allow to take short breaks. Jishou Art Museum is a regional art museum built in the Jishou, Hunan Province, China, and is a bridge built over a river to facilitate the movement of residents.
