We’d like to encourage the classic car community to let car makers and dealers know what we think of their loathsome schemes. PARLIAMENT TALKS SCRAPPAGE  A parliamentary briefing paper has been published debating the 2009 scrappage scheme and those currently on offer. The Standard Ten that was recently saved from a Ford scrappage deal with the help of PC has been officially donated to the Standard Motor Club. The 1959 classic was threatened with the crusher when the owner traded it in. As we went to press, ownership was being transferred from the scrapyard to the club. The vehicle is expected to be cared for locally until a new classic collection opens in Caithness. ‘The car is safe at last,’ said Bob Alexander from the Standard Motor Club Scottish Group. There are plans for the Standard to make a triumphant appearance on the Practical Classics stand at the PC CC&R Show in March.…

Clubbed out A record 130 car clubs will fill the halls of the PC CC&R Show in March. Some 26 of them will be making their show debut, including the MG Car Club. Per Ardua… …ad Astra. In this case, a MkII version. The second-gen Astra/Opel Kadett used most of the oily bits from the MkI in 1979 but carried Vauxhall through to 1991. One failure was security – the Astra/Belmont MkII was the most stolen car in Britain at one time. Commercial traveller The P100 pick-up or ‘ute’ lasted to 1988 in Cortina MkV form, with all of them being manufactured in South Africa. A short-lived Sierra-based version replaced it. I built and tested the instrument binnacles for the production XJ220. Each one was individually calibrated up to 220mph on a cobbled together test rig using a Psion organiser (remember them?) With just 300 miles on the clock since completion, everything about Ed’s TVR feels new-car tight. There’s a crisp bark to the engine as it hurls this very light car down the road. I grab the next gear via the weighty but super-precise gearshift and repeat the process up through the ’box with no let-up in the rate at which the Tuscan accelerates. Steering response is instant, and the firm suspension and short wheelbase make it great for zipping around twisty Buckinghamshire lanes. It’s cosy in here, while you are so close to both the door and the centre console that the bucket seats are almost superfluous. It’s not a car you could ever really relax in – but if it was it wouldn’t be a proper TVR.…

Badge engineering. The indigenous British motor industry did this so well, sweeping up small, separate companies into large conglomerates but keeping the old names going by applying their badges to fractionally different versions of essentially the same car. And why not? It kept the dealers happy, it capitalised on customer loyalty, and it made for a more varied carscape. Sometimes, though, owners can be very defensive about their cars’ marque identification even in the face of obvious absurdity. It’s noticeable in the Imp world that I sometimes inhabit. REVIEW It’s all over now Rock and film cars star at Historics Historics final sale of 2017, held at Mercedes World, included a selection of cars with loose – or not so loose – rock star and film connections. We’ll start with the real thing, a Mercedes-Benz 250 S bought new by Rolling Stones bass man Bill Wyman, then bought back by him in 1991 as a wreck, which he had restored. Wyman finally sold it again in 2015, when it made £20,700 at a Bonhams auction. The car has since covered just 3000 miles so we reckon whoever paid £16,800 for it at Historics got a good deal. Craig Cheetham I have a confession – I’m quite a fan of banger racing. If cars weren’t scrapped, there’d be no such things as classics. The majority of cars that end up on the oval are unloved and often too far gone to justify repair – they provide parts to keep others on the road. The R8 Rover (1989-95 200/400 Series) has long been a banger boys’ dream. They’re light, strong and they handle. The K-Series punches above its weight in a sea of Vauxhall Hi-Torq and Ford CVH engines. And in the sub 1.5-litre class, 214s are hot property. Just ask Josh. You will need Scissors, sharp knife, sealant or adhesive, cavity wax, gloss paint (optional). While you’re there… Obtain spare trim clips and anything else that’s missing or broken. Get some grease and rustproofing wax, too, and you can service the entire door in one fell swoop. Contact adhesive If you’re using contact adhesive, apply it to the frame, then to the sheet – then fit the sheet immediately. This buys time for minor adjustments. Scissors Treat yourself to a large, sharp pair of scissors that will glide through the weathersheet. How you ever struggled to track down the cause of soggy footwells during wet weather? You will need Arc welding set; welding rods (6013 and 7018 general purpose); welding shield, cap and gauntlets; leather jacket, spats or apron; extractor fan (or an old desk fan); slag-chipping hammer; wire brush. Multi-purpose set As we’ve said in previous features in this series, a multi-function MIG, TIG and arc set is a fine investment. Experiment Practice is the key to good results. Cover plates with beads of weld and practise different joints. Check your joints for good penetration and bend them to destruction. Sticky stick? If your rod sticks, check the earth, the power supply, the current and the hot-start settings. Hot hatches were the in-thing back in the Eighties. Everyone was doing it – there were warmed-up derivatives of almost every humdrum hatch from the Nissan Cherry to the Alfa Romeo Arna. And while here and now everyone bleats about mpg figures down the pub, in the decade of red braces it was all about the 0-60mph sprint. As (whisper it) most hot hatches weren’t actually all that quick by today’s standards. The Golf GTi just about managed it in under ten seconds – quicker than your mum’s Golf Driver, but still only about as good as a brisk repmobile. But a Maestro? The magnificent Nick Larkin asked why people banger race classic cars in the December 2017 issue of PC . This struck me as an odd question. He might as well ask why anyone does anything with classic cars. Why do he and I hoard more cars than we’re ever likely to have the time and resources to get on the road in our lifetimes? Perhaps inspired by the growing number of one-make auctions, Silverstone tried a partial one-make sale for the Saturday leg of their double-header at the NEC Classic Motor Show. And it was a partial success. A collection of mostly beyond-superb fast Fords made up 24 of the 67 lots, and their presence packed out Silverstone’s fenced-off area of Hall 2. A lot were just Ford fans along for the show. But there were also plenty of people who could – as became apparent – afford Ferraris, but choose loyalty to the Blue Oval logo. 1 Assess project There are three categories: buggered; rotten; and missing. This car has numerous items in all three areas and will need plenty of TLC. 2 Probe engine The flat-four is soundly seized… a cheap borescope showed a lack of corrosion but the bores look quite wavy, so the rebuild was clearly some miles back. 3 Lubricate bores Currently dosed in XCP to loosen it up. If it turns, a cylinder leak test will indicate if the open valves’ seats have corroded, meaning head off and a quick tickle. 4 Assess structure This is where the most work is required. I had a 1989 Saab 900 T16 Aero coupé – one of only 500 made for the UK market. A neighbour pulled out of the space next to mine in a LWB Mercedes Sprinter and clipped the nose, removing the front corner bumper part and smashing the indicator/ marker light. My insurance company wanted to write it off and offered me 300 quid. I told them to do one, bought it back for £250 and fixed the car for the cost of a 12-pack thanks to a mate who had a good collection of spares. 1 FEB 15 Electric shocker Ed labelled all the wiring before removing the loom – and discovered this rather scary burnt-out section under the dash. 2 MAR 15 Snappy answer One of the window runners had snapped, so Ed fabricated a new one from aluminium channel section. 3 APR 15 Just crazy The body looked pretty sound but stripping off the paint revealed poorly repaired damage and areas of crazing which had to be cut out and repaired. 4 MAY 15 Welded bliss The chassis outriggers were rotten, but with the body off Ed found it easy to weld in new tubing and did the whole job for fifty quid. 5 DEC 15 Bodge beater Ed cut out this bodged section of wheelarch then built up a structural repair so…

Jaguar E-type It’s not often a reader comes across an abandoned Jaguar E-type. Danny Hopkins I was never a fan unti I drove one. The Ford Ka, to me, was a shopping trolley for the elderly. How that changed when I got behind the wheel of my mother-in-law’s 25,000-mile example.
