TOYOTA has revealed a hydrogen-fuelled version of its Hilux pick-up truck, developed in the UK using parts from the brand’s Mirai fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV). The prototype truck has been developed to tempt corporate fleets that want to decarbonise their vehicles, but find battery-electric models compromised. No specs have been revealed, but around 20 per cent of the hydrogen Hilux’s load bed is taken up by the module containing the hybrid drive and the 12v system batteries. The project has been part-funded by UK taxpayers via a £5.6m grant awarded by the Advanced Propulsion Centre. Production plans are said to depend on market feedback.…

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee probe hopes to highlight a range of issues, with the focus on understanding how the Government will achieve its deadlines for phasing out non-zero-emissions vehicles. BACK in Japan, meanwhile, Toyota has stunned traditionalists by launching an SUV version of its Century limousine. The manufacturer claims the new Century SUV, which has a 3.5-litre V6 plug-in hybrid powertrain, four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering, will still offer the “dignity, quietness and ride comfort befitting a Century”. But at a global premiere event, the company also announced a GRMN performance-focused version, and teased a picture of a cabriolet, too. SNOW JUST when we thought our tyre testing was back to normal following the restrictions forced by the pandemic, the weather threw a spanner in the works. Despite our heading north at a time which should have guaranteed good testing conditions, unseasonably warm weather at Pirelli’s Sottozero proving ground near Flurheden, Sweden, ruled out our handling tests. We had to rely on proving-ground staff for traction and braking results completed when temperatures dropped. For braking, they measured the distance taken to slow from 35-10kph (22-6mph) while traction recorded the time taken to accelerate between the two speeds. A replacement or update for the Wintrac Pro is needed if the Dutch tyre is to get in among the pacesetters. There is little to choose between the next four. Subaru may return to WRC, claims FIA chief SUBARU is known mostly for its rallying pedigree, but while the brand hasn’t competed in the WRC since 2008 (when it left the sport because of the global economic crisis), FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has said the long wait for the Japanese manufacturer to return to WRC could soon be over. Speaking ahead of the Acropolis Rally, Ben Sulayem said: “I see positive signs from the chairman of Toyota in convincing Subaru to come back.” He also suggested Toyota could let Subaru use a WRC-approved engine, given that Subaru doesn’t have one of its own. IF you’re going all in to get your hands on cars such as the RS 7 or Panamera, then you need to be under no illusions that they’ll be cheap to run. Even with a plug-in powertrain, the costs are still going to be steep. Unless you do loads of driving around town, you’re going to have to call the Porsche’s V8 into plenty of action, and we managed 26.3mpg, which translates into petrol costs of £2,627 for every 10,000 miles.
