THE auditor general for Wales has said that the failure of TVR’s proposed factory in the country could result in a multi-million-pound bill for taxpayers. Adrian Crompton, who oversees the audit of Welsh public-sector spending, has written to the country’s parliament after concerns were raised about the risk to public funds invested in the project. He stated that the Welsh Government spent over £14m in its failed attempt to attract TVRA (TVR Automotive) manufacturing to Wales. Earlier this year, TVR said that it would not lease the factory in Wales, and revealed that it was eyeing up a base in Hampshire. The letter claims the Welsh government decided in 2023 to sell the factory at a loss of £4.85m. However, no formal offers have been received for it.…

AUDI will no longer fit its petrol cars with chintzy fake exhausts, the manufacturer has confirmed. The move comes after extensive customer feedback, with prospective owners turning their noses up at the current trend for tail-pipe trims. Speaking to Auto Express, an Audi spokesperson said: “All PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) cars will have ‘hot’ [functional] tailpipes.” While there’s no confirmation the new Audi “hot tailpipe” design policy will manifest itself on the maker’s smaller, MQB-based models, all of the larger PPCplatform Audis will get functional exhaust tips going forward. The news comes as Auto Express reveals that almost a third of new cars registered in 2023 were liable for the Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) surcharge. Paid annually over and above the standard £190 VED rate in years two to five of ownership, the luxury-car tax was increased from £390 per year in 2023 to £410 in 2024. Thanks to the adoption of a new EU regulation (R117-04), tyres sold across The Channel and beyond must be tested to ensure they meet the same minimum wet-weather braking requirement when worn to the lawful minimum tread of 1.6mm, as they do when brand new. LABOUR missed an opportunity to inject some certainty into the future of the UK car market after its plan to reinstate the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars was notably absent from its first King’s Speech. HAVING a cordless inflator to boost your tyre pressures when necessary makes it much easier to stay safe and save money. They’ve been around for a while, but the new breed is mini inflators, which are just the right size for a glovebox.
