PROJECT Las Quemas House ARCHITECTS Winckler Arquitectos Asociados Saric Architects LOCATION Osorno, Chile The sunken bathtub in Carlos Winckler and Birghita Teuber’s new home may seem novel until you speak to their son—and the project’s architect— Cristian Winckler. He wanted to keep their new 3,000-square-foot residence, located in a cloudy climate, as bright as possible. No fewer than nine atriums punctuate the home’s interiors to admit as much sunlight as possible and foster a connection to nature. How do you approach universal design? We’ve learned to expand the definition of product usability to include accessibility. Good usability transcends all of our limitations. For example, a notification light can be a redundant form of feedback. Traditionally, it’s been a buzzer. Project Heine Residence Designers Fabian and Dorothee Heine Location Hamburg, Germany Fabian and Dorothee Heine’s renovation began and ended with a particular kitchen system. Almost a year before finding the flat they would call home, the Hamburg-based couple decided upon a matteblack Vipp kitchen that Fabian had glimpsed in the window of the company’s Copenhagen showroom. “I took a picture and sent it to my wife,” recalls Fabian, who was on a business trip at the time. “She totally agreed. PROJECT Selement House DESIGNERS Darren Selement and Cathryn Rich LOCATION Chapel Hill, North Carolina In the mid 1990s, Darren Selement visited an exhibition of artist Piet Mondrian’s work at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City—an experience that has had a lasting influence on the musician, writer, and graphic designer. PROJECT Hobson Renovation ARCHITECT Hawkins & Associates LOCATION Reno, Nevada MEMBERS OF CHIP AND SUSIE HOBSON’S dining club could be forgiven for wanting to hold all their dinners at the couple’s Reno home. Or, specifically, in their eat-in kitchen, an airy volume featuring clean-lined cabinetry and filled with light. Recalling the U-shaped kitchen, cramped dining area and breakfast nook that originally made up the space, architect Jack Hawkins laughs, saying, “It was completely dysfunctional.” The Hobsons don’t dispute his assessment. PROJECT Cuddington Residence ARCHITECT Clinton Cuddington LOCATION Vancouver, British Columbia Though architect Clinton Cuddington was expectedly meticulous when designing a home for his family of four in Vancouver, British Columbia, he was careful to leave select interior elements open for collaboration. “My approach was to create a test-bed for explorations based in local craft,” he says. This tactic— with Cuddington as the overseer to a team of talented artisans—is especially apparent in three bathrooms spread across as many levels. For each space, Cuddington worked closely with Jasna Sokolovic and Noel O’Connell, ceramic artists who run the studio Dear Human. In the upstairs bathroom, designed for Cuddington’s teenage children, Sokolovic and O’Connell took basic, off-the-shelf square tiles and added x-shaped decals in a range of tones. Sunk into a slope beside a stream in Portugal’s Caniçada Valley, the rear of this vacation retreat’s ground floor is deeply removed from the outdoors.
