TheWichita, Kansas, maker of ultralight aircraft has introduced a line of digital instruments designed as longer-life alternatives to traditional flight instruments. Belite’s turn coordinator, driven by a solid-state gyro, is as thick as a quarter and weighs less than 2 ounces. It fits into a standard 2.25-inch panel cutout and offers a high-contrast LCD screen. After a fitful production start for the A5 light-sport aircraft, Icon Aircraft has regrouped. The company has built a composite factory in Mexico to “improve and control the manufacturing process while simultaneously reducing cost,” says Icon’s founder and CEO, Kirk Hawkins. While the new Tijuana-based composite shop is getting up and running, Icon has opened two training facilities for its A5 amphibian — one at its headquarters in Vacaville, California, and one in downtown Tampa, Florida. A third facility is expected to open soon at an undisclosed location in Texas. Icon has taken a lot of flack in the past 10 months for a restrictive sales contract that angered some buyers, and for reserving all of the early production airplanes for its flight- training program. A letter arrived today from Cincinnati’s Xavier University with the preposterous claim that I graduated from that institution 50 years ago. Maybe some reunion event is in the works, because the letter requests that I complete the enclosed questionnaire to be included in a “memory book.” This was no fill-in-the-blank thing about your marital and professional status, but a bunch of essay questions encouraging reunionites (I made that word up — and I was an English major) to wax eloquent about “What in the hell have you accomplished, if anything, in the past half-century?” What should I do? In 1989 I interviewed Barry Goldwater, the former Arizona senator famously trounced by Lyndon Johnson in the 1964 presidential election. Goldwater held many opinions that would scandalize Republicans today: He supported gays in the military, socialized medicine, reduced military spending and a guaranteed minimum income for all Americans.
