While the design world has always held a flame for the power of red and its ability to evoke passion, energy, and a pop of joy across an array of interior applications, its widespread use had largely been reserved for those with a natural confidence for all things bold. But, when US interior designer Taylor Simon coined The Unexpected Red Theory on TikTok earlier this year, the internet’s heart was set aflutter, sparking a rouge revolution that saw the polarising colour re-enter the design vernacular in a big way. The rule, according to Taylor, suggests that inserting something red – big or small – into a room where it otherwise wouldn’t belong, can instantly elevate a space. Just released by Double in collaboration with interior designer Jono Fleming, the Checks range has a pair of standout features – each two-layer rug looks great and is machinewashable, ensuring mess can be quickly dealt with. COASTAL SHIFT How renovating can change the program + THE BRIEF Previously a small, outdated space with a lack of usable bench space and almost no storage, this renovated laundry is now fresh, modern and easy to use. Interior designer Tess Mathews of TM Design Studio says the owners, a retired couple living on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, wanted a practical wash zone that effortlessly suited their coastal aesthetic. “It was important for the laundry to connect nicely to other areas of the home,” says Tess. + THE DETAILS Tess used a textured, neutral palette featuring materials emulating the home’s seaside surrounds. “Given that it’s a smaller space, we focused on introducing softer finishes to avoid overpowering the room with anything too bold or dominant,” she says. 1 floor it Anticipating the day when they downsize from their spacious family home into this one-bedroom South Yarra apartment, Ange and Bruce decided to renovate. It sits on the sunny third floor of a beautiful old building designed by interwar architect Arthur Plaistid and built in 1938.
