Can there be such as thing as too much competition? The UK having four major mobile networks might be one too many, if Three CEO Robert Finnegan is to be believed. In a recent financial results announcement, he characterised the UK market as “dysfunctional”. Why? Because the fierce competition between networks is making it harder to roll out 5G and improve Britain’s mobile infrastructure. “As things stand, the UK does not have the quality of mobile infrastructure it deserves,” said Finnegan, in a statement provided to PC Pro by Three. “Investment is spread too thinly across too many players, meaning our networks are sub-par by international standards.” Finnegan has a ready-made solution: consolidation. Perhaps, but where its rivals lean towards alien-like creations with complicated internal layouts, HP takes the route of a stylish yet understated case and easy-toupgrade components. The Omen 45L marks a slight departure from the norm by including a Cryo Chamber. This isn’t somewhere to store your brain when your body goes south, but a separate section at the top of the PC where the liquid from the CPU cooling system circulates. But it has done exactly that for more than 20 years, backing it up with a generous three-year warranty that covers parts, labour and courier collection/delivery costs. The Deco X90 finds its own balance: it’s hardly a budget system, but it’s competitively priced considering it promises to deliver Wi-Fi 6 for up to 200 devices, throughout a home of up to six bedrooms. Despite those ambitious claims, the kit contains only two stations. They’re not much to look at, but they’re tasteful, with a single status LED near the base of each one. SCORE PRICE £633 (£760 inc VAT) from philips.co.uk It’s no surprise that Philips is one of the first companies to produce a 32in 4K gaming monitor for a reasonable price. As a brand, it’s always strived to deliver value in areas where others struggle. For instance, the last time we reviewed a 32in 4K gaming screen – the magnificent ViewSonic Elite XG320U (see issue 327, p91) – it had a list price of £1,079. Its street price has since dropped to around £950, but until now gamers who sought 4K on larger screens were being asked to pay a hefty premium for the features they demand. That’s not the only thing the Find X5 Pro phone has going for it, though, which is fortunate with a price of £1,049. If you see a much cheaper model, you may have stumbled across the standard Oppo Find X5 or its Lite sibling. Their prices start at £749 and £419 respectively, but they’re not the same thing at all, with different chassis, screens and processors. SCORE PRICE Range starts at £694 (£833 inc VAT) from box.co.uk Technically, the Acer TravelMate Spin P4 sits in the same genre as the HP Elite Dragonfly G2: they’re both 2-in-1 convertibles that target business buyers. In the hand, however, they couldn’t be more different. The Spin P4 feels every gram of its 1.55kg weight, and we measured it at 18.5mm thick: a shade more than Acer’s 17.99mm claim and notably thicker than the Dragonfly’s 16.1mm. Another obvious difference is the size of their screen and bezels, with the 14in Spin P4 measuring 236mm from front to back compared to the 198mm of the 13.3in Dragonfly. SCORE PRICE Tecra A40 range starts at £699 (£839 inc VAT) from misco.co.uk It wasn’t long ago that a business laptop costing under a grand was a lumpy object that brought gasps of dismay from anyone unfortunate enough to be saddled with it. Not so this Tecra A40. While it inevitably has shortcomings when compared to more expensive rivals such as the Surface Laptop 4, there’s only one winner when it comes to value. The A40’s greatest strength is the quality and design of its chassis. It’s made from plastic, but this is tough ABS that exudes durability, and the Tecra has been tested to MIL STD 810-H standards. SCORE PRICE Range starts at £899 (£1,079 inc VAT) from microsoft.com/uk Microsoft describes the Surface Laptop 4 as “ultra-thin” and, much as we hate to approve the use of “ultra” in any sentence, we can’t argue here. On paper, a 14.5mm thickness sounds similar to the 19mm of a typical laptop, but the difference is obvious as soon as you clap eyes on it. If anything, the Surface Laptop 4 looks even slimmer, thanks to a design that tapers to 10mm at the front. An all-metal chassis means that others beat it for lightness, but at 1.3kg the Surface Laptop won’t weigh you down. SCORE PRICE Range starts at £1,259 (£1,511 inc VAT) from store.hp.com The Dragonfly is in that awkward period of gestation between G2 and G3. That means the G2 is coming to the end of its life – models can be found in the channel but not directly from HP – but the G3 is yet to actually flutter its wings. Nor is it a straightforward evolution from one generation to the next. One area where the G3 clearly wins is its inclusion of 12th gen Intel Core chips, but it loses the G2’s touchscreen and its convertible design. That’s a shame but, in most scenarios, it isn’t fatal. We measure speed using a range of tests. PC Pro’s own assess how quickly each system can process a set of image and video files, and handle multiple workloads while simultaneously playing high-definition video. We also test using the industry standard PCMark 10 benchmark, and use the synthetic Cinebench R23 and Geekbench 5 to assess the laptops’ single-core and multicore performance. We test the performance of the internal SSD using the AS SSD tool, which determines maximum sequential read and write speeds. We then test 3D performance, again using both real-world and synthetic software. There’s a really neat feature in the new 12.3 version of macOS Monterey, which has just landed after a lengthy beta period. It’s called Universal Control, and it offers a host of useful features. The first is the use of one keyboard and trackpad across a number of devices. For example, I have my 12.9in iPad Pro sat to the right of my MacBook Pro: if I slide the mouse pointer over to the right, it automatically moves onto the iPad. I can type there, do anything that I would do with the Magic Keyboard stand, but I don’t need to move my hands from the MacBook itself. The news that Insteon, purveyors of IoT smart home products, has suddenly shut down will come as an unpleasant surprise to its erstwhile customers. The servers are gone, as are the website’s support pages. There is some hope that it will be possible to resuscitate the service to a minimal level, if only to allow customers to migrate data to a different service, but that remains a hope at this stage. Sadly, I’m not surprised it has come to this. Any product that relies on an intimate relationship with a cloud service to function is at continual risk of that service failing or disappearing altogether. As a fellow ex-banking person, I agree entirely with Steve Cassidy on NFTs, Amazon and “open banking” (see issue 332, p120). I suspect that open banking is how criminals will describe it once they have broken into the system. But my issue is maybe deeper, in the potential increasing risk to our bank accounts from another direction. I have no issue with allowing variable direct debit access to certain utilities or government services, but draw the line at enabling variable amounts to be taken by companies. What, my colleague wanted to know, is the point of a group test where all the products get a four out of five rating? He meant this as a criticism, but I should quickly say that it wasn’t a PC Pro test that earned his ire. It’s still a good question. Every few months, a high-profile vulnerability comes along that grabs the media spotlight, but in many cases these aren’t the threats you need to be focusing on. As Lewis Pope, “head security nerd” at N-able, points out, a vulnerability with a Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) rating of 10 but no proof-of-concept exploit poses less danger in that moment than one with a score of 7 that’s already in the wild. “The former is a big worry for researchers, but businesses should focus on the exploit that’s known to exist,” he advised. The European Union has announced plans for a new Digital Markets Act that could tighten the screws on the big tech “gatekeepers” and force them to make their messaging apps talk to each other. Though the full details are not yet clear, the EU’s plan is that companies deemed “core platform services”, such as search engines and social networks (no prizes for guessing who they mean), could soon be forced to enable customers using one messaging app to send messages to users on other platforms.
