There was a time when you would go for a ride and not know what it was going to be like. In the early days of mountain biking, more often than not this involved choosing a dotted line on a topo map, following it, misreading the contours, and ending up chucking your bike over a ledge and climbing down to where it had landed in a thicket of rosehip bushes.
