One of the biggest rivalries in all of racing history has just roared onto the big screen. The film is Ford v Ferrari, and not since Steve McQueen’s classic Le Mans nearly 50 years ago has there been a film that captures the soul of sports car racing this effectively. Of course it depicts the American manufacturer’s quest during the 1960s to unseat Ferrari as perennial champion of sports car racing’s crown jewel event: the 24 Hours of Le Mans. 2019 was Charles Leclerc’s first with Ferrari—and only his second in F1 after winning the F2 championship in 2017 and driving for Ferrari’s customer team Alfa Romeo in 2018. I was approached by my good friend Ron Oha who is a member of Diecast Junkies, one of several diecast groups I belong to. He asked me if I’d be able to make a Ford Ranchero for him using a GMP 1966-67 Fairlane as the starting point.
