This March marks our one-year anniversary of living in a pandemic. It’s easy to look back and regret not having all the wonderful experiences this horrifying, bat-borne scourge took from us: hugging our friends, going to a movie, wearing our new nipple tassels at Coachella. WHERE TO STAY Big Sur is a coastal community along the Pacific Coast Highway with little pockets of campgrounds, inns, galleries, and restaurants with beautiful views. The Great was inspired by its rocky coastline and redwood forests. When we visit, we like to stay at the Post Ranch Inn (1); it feels like staying at an elfin village of tree houses. I’ve always admired my grandfather Stanley. He was born in the late 1800s in Calabria, Italy, and moved to Northfield, Vt., when he was 14 to find opportunity and build a new life in America. Back then that area was known for its stone quarries, so family members and other Italian immigrants taught him how to carve stone. By all accounts, he was a natural. He quickly learned how to sculpt large pieces into beautiful monuments. Eventually he started his own successful monument company in Peekskill, N.Y., which became our family business. My uncle, who was an architect and interior designer, would help with the designs, as would my father, who is an artist. It was truly the American dream.
