It looks highly likely Ubuntu 16.04 will come with support for the Vulkan graphics API, which is a low-overhead API that can allow even relatively underpowered devices run impressive-looking games. Vulkan is also multiplatform, so unlike other APIs, such as DirectX or Metal (which are locked to Microsoft and Apple platforms respectively), or Mantle (which only works with AMD hardware), Vulkan can be used no matter what OS or hardware. But perhaps best of all it’s royalty-free and open source.
