The Midwest’s most prominent LGBTQ+ resort first began in 1981 as the modest Douglas Dunes, a 22-room haven for queer people in Douglas, Michigan. In 1999, a night of pizza and margaritas inspired Mike Jones, Danny Esterline, and Greg Trzybinski to purchase and rename the property as The Dunes Resort.
This trio developed the Dunes into a must-visit destination for a diverse clientele from Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, and beyond: A 22-acre resort boasting over 80 rooms, a large pool, a cabaret, and bars and lounges, with lodging and events that were often more affordable than queer coastal peers. “People come here to find themselves, lose themselves, but most importantly — be themselves,” Jones said in a statement.
