GRIEVING Pietermaritzburg families are forced to travel long distances to cremate their loved ones because the local crematoriums are not operational. DA councillor Suraya Reddy said Pietermaritzburg had two crematoriums in Mountain Rise, which had not been functioning properly for the past three years due to ongoing “technical issues”. “We have had cases where bodies had been half cremated or the bones of the bodies were not properly crushed into ash due to mechanical failure. Distraught families then had to take the half-cremated remains to other facilities to complete the cremation,” claimed Reddy. She said some families had then also opted to use the private Cato Ridge Crematorium. However, this facility was destroyed in a recent fire. DURBAN waterman Jace Govender has been honoured with a gold award for bravery from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) for his efforts in rescuing more than 200 people during the April 2022 floods in KwaZulu-Natal. Govender, 53, the superintendent for eThekwini Aquatic Safety and a professional fisherman, was also recognised for using his sardine boat to rescue people along with the NSRI team. The organisation said Govender’s actions in the face of direct danger “was in the very finest traditions of the National Sea Rescue Institute”. MEMBERS of the angling community have condemned the Supreme Court of Appeal’s ruling against the use of drones and other mechanical aids when angling off rock and surf. This follows a legal battle that started in 2022, after the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment issued a notice prohibiting the use of drones or other bait-carrying devices. The department said it issued the notice after it came to their attention that anglers were using bait- carrying devices, including drones, to catch fish and sharks. Aggrieved by the effects it would have on their businesses, several entities involved in manufacturing, importing and selling fishing drones decided to challenge the department. The care in state facilities is appalling. It seems like every month, these state hospitals make headlines for all the wrong reasons.
