Should they find themselves in such a scenario, they’re liable to bolt. “Usually, when an autistic child wanders off, he or she is on the severe side of the spectrum,” says Lori McIlwain, mother of a 12-year-old autistic boy, Connor, and executive director of the National Autism Association. Instead, at about 5 a.m., a phlebotomist entered Jerry’s room to draw blood and found him lying across the bottom of his bed, not breathing, mottled and blue, without a pulse. Our meeting came on Martha’s Vineyard in July of 1999, one day after John F. Kennedy, Jr., was buried at sea off that same island. What if you could reach out and run your hands over your favorite piece of art? It’s a tantalizing thought, one that some museums make a reality by offering “touch tours” to blind and partially sighted patrons. Photographer Matt Ducklo started documenting these hands-on art experiences after finishing a photo project on Seeing Eye dogs. London’s Tate Modern and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art are two institutions that offer touch tours of their sculptures, and Alabama’s Birmingham Museum of Art has tactile reliefs of some of the museum’s finest paintings.
