In a recent British study, cyclists felt more alert and rode significantly faster when they were exposed to artificial light for 30 minutes prior to waking. Sugar is fast overtaking fat as a threat to your heart, according to new research in JAMA Internal Medicine In the study, people who got 10 to 24 percent of their calories from added sugar were 30 percent more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than those who consumed less. Nearly 3 in 4 Americans take in that much daily, and 10 percent get 25 percent or more, which raises risk threefold. Sugar may increase inflammation as well as raising blood pressure and cholesterol levels, says author Quanhe Yang, Ph.D., a senior scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Here’s another reason to love strawberries: Snacking on this sweet summer treat can help keep your cholesterol in check, according to new research in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. In the study, healthy people who ate about 3 cups of strawberries daily experienced a 14 percent decrease in LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol—and a 9 percent drop in their total cholesterol—after a month. This effect may be due to the berries’ high levels of anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that give the fruit its bright color, says author Maurizio Battino, Ph.D., an associate professor of biochemistry at Italy’s Marche Polytechnic University.
