Last month, I was in Boston for the presentation of the Earthshot Prize, the annual awards started by Prince William designed to help accelerate creative solutions to the climate crisis. Harry Li wants to spend the Lunar New Year holiday in his home village in northern China’s Hebei province, but he is afraid of spending more than 12 hours on crowded trains and buses lest he bring COVID-19 to his elderly parents, who have not been vaccinated. “It’s been three years since I’ve been home [for Lunar New Year],” says Li, a 20-year-old law student in Shanghai. “I was vaccinated nine months ago, but everyone around me is still getting sick.” Many Chinese face a similar conundrum. A year ago, Ukraine’s economy was on a strong footing, with a debt-to-GDP of less than 50% and a budget deficit of 3.5%. Then came Feb. 24, and with it a full-scale war. We were in a new reality, with very different financial needs. Federal Regulators are considering a ban on gas stoves—present in roughly one-third of U.S. homes—amid rising concern about increased risk of asthma in children and other respiratory-health risks linked to indoor air pollution from the appliances. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which can issue mandatory standards or ban products if no feasible change would adequately protect the public, says it is still figuring out the best way to tackle this issue. The Media Blitz following the Jan. 10 publication of Prince Harry’s memoir Spare has one major theme: he has grown apart from his father King Charles III and his brother William, the Prince of Wales. Family tensions boiled over in public when, in January 2020, Harry announced that he was taking a step back from his royal duties because of what he saw as a lack of support from the palace staff over negative tabloid coverage of his wife Meghan Markle. But passages from Spare suggest tensions go back to birth—an underlying resentment of being “the spare,” while his older brother is “the heir” to the throne. Wherever you look, animals are in trouble. Our world is dominated by humans everywhere: on land, in the seas, and in the air. No nonhuman animal escapes our domination, which inflicts wrongful injury on animals through the barbarous cruelties of the factory meat industry, pollution of the air and the seas, or neglect of the companion animals that people purport to love. In a way, this problem is age-old. Both Western and non-Western philosophical traditions have deplored human cruelty to animals for around two millennia. The Hindu emperor Ashoka, a convert to Buddhism, wrote about his efforts to give up meat and to forgo all practices that harmed animals. Cooperation, the thing we need most to solve big problems in the world, is being collapsed by the thing that promised to connect us and bring us closer together: social media. The problem is that social connection isn’t actually the business model—“engagement” is. Social media platforms (TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and more) make choices to show us—the users—content that is most “engaging.” Unfortunately, what is most engaging isn’t always aligned with what we value. Soon enough, most adults must reckon with their parents’ physical and mental vulnerabilities, and it’s always a blow. Writer-director Mia Hansen-Løve’s delicately shaded One Fine Morning deals with the wrenchingly mundane nature of caring for those who used to take care of us. But it’s also about the difficulty—and the necessity—of tending to our own emotional lives even as we’re looking after others. That sounds so simple, you might not think it’s enough to fill a whole movie.
