Early in the pandemic, experts projected that the world economy could shrink by almost 10% in 2020. Yet what played out was a contraction of 3.1%—still a huge loss of output, but not nearly as dire. To a large extent, this was due to international cooperation. Countries came together to diagnose the problem: a simultaneous shock to supply and demand. In the Apple TV+ drama Dear Edward, a jet falls out of the sky, killing everyone on board except 12-year-old Edward Adler. That he’s lucky to be alive is cold comfort; his parents and beloved brother are dead, he’s sent to live with a bitter aunt (Taylor Schilling), and posttraumatic stress abounds. “Sometimes,” says Edward (luminous newcomer Colin O’Brien), “I feel like the crash is still sitting on that field, and it’s never gonna stop burning.” It’s an apt metaphor for the series’ central theme: grief. President Joe Biden announced on Jan. 25 that the U.S. will provide 31 American-made M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine after weeks of debate among Administration policymakers and their European counterparts. The tanks are part of a long-term plan to strengthen the Ukrainian army with advanced weaponry to fight invading Russian forces, which occupy much of eastern and southern Ukraine. The policy turnaround is the latest sign the White House expects the conflict in Ukraine to last for many months and is prepared to support Kyiv for its duration.
