Pro Tip   Top designers share their favourite stitching tips “Don cut your threads too long” This sounds obvious, but it is something I often do, because I think I'll save time from not having to stop sewing to cut more thread, thread a needle and cast on/off. But it doesn’t – when I cut the thread too long, thinking, “It will be ok, I’ll get away with it this time,” I never do. The thread twists, and knots and generally gets in a mess. Start stitching… on aida Step 1 CUT a 40cm thread length, and thread your needle with two of the six strands. Knot one end and start with a waste knot (opposite). DANI HUNT I find aida ideal for useable items (such as bookmarks) as it’s much stiffer; evenweave is better for household items (like cushions). SANDY CAMILLOCCI I like using aida so much better. On small pieces you don’t even have to use a hoop. The weight of the fabric makes for a more substantial piece and is good for cards, ornaments, and framed pieces. A good all-purpose fabric which is easy to stitch on. ELISA BENSON I like both. Last May I started your Fit For A Queen sampler from issue 304 as a surprise for my mum’s 90th birthday. By June I had the first image done and the rest followed slowly, as I am a full-time carer for my mum and couldn’t do it when she was about.
