This year’s EFG London Jazz Festival, which runs from 10 to 19 November at venues, across the capital for 10 days and nights, continues to expand its programme of unique line-ups and collaborations with some eye-catching additions. Leading the pack is US sax star Joshua Redman, who is set to bring his newly-formed Quintet to the Barbican on 12 November. Composer, saxophonist, bandleader and visual artist Matana Roberts is set to release her new album Coin Coin Chapter Five: In the Garden… on 29 September via Canadian imprint CST. The fifth instalment of her vast project exploring African-American history through ancestry, archive and place, the album weaves together elements of jazz, avant-garde composition, folk and spoken word, as Roberts tells the story of an ancestor, a woman “who died following complications from an illegal abortion”. At a time when reproductive rights are under attack in the US, Roberts explains how this influenced the music: “I wanted to talk about this issue, but in a way where she gets some sense of liberation, to create a portrait of a woman who is, as the lyrics put it, electric, alive, spirited, fire…

Back in 2013, I asked Peter Brötzmann if he would ever stop playing. His answer was an emphatic 'no'. He would, he said, carry on “as long as my body keeps me going and my brain works somehow.” It’s emblematic of his total commitment to an all-consuming, life-long artistic calling that he has been true to his word. News of his death comes just four months after his final performances in February this year. Born in Remscheid, in western Germany, Brötzmann first came to jazz aged 13, after witnessing a life-changing concert by clarinettist Sidney Bechet. Which brings us neatly to bassist and Guildford Jazz founder Marianne Windham. Now a valuable player in her own right, she made the ultimate mid-life decision, reinventing herself as a working musician and jazz activist, having set aside a successful career as the director of a software business. How the world turns! It’s just a year since Trish Clowes and My Iris released A View with a Room on Greenleaf, esteemed US trumpeter Dave Douglas’ label. That album was largely born from lockdown isolation and uncertainty. But now, here in flesh and blood, were those key players – joined together for the first time, trading choruses as though sprung from the same jazz womb. And there was a third spirit present at the crowded, expectant 606, a spirit deeply embedded in the jazz reality of Clowes and Douglas. UK imprint My Only Desire Records (MODR) has come up with an inspired idea to introduce the riches of the Brit-Jazz canon to new audiences, with their Brit Jazz 45s series. This sees contemporary jazz acts record two 1960s/70s British jazz compositions apiece and present them as limited-edition vinyl 7” singles. The series gets underway with saxophonist/composer Kevin Figes and his group You Are Here, paying homage to two revered Brit jazz musicians – Keith Tippett and Elton Dean – with newly-minted recordings of a classic track from each. Figes’ group, You Are Here, grew out of a celebration of the life of late, great pianist/composer Keith Tippett, who died in 2020, and with whom Figes recorded and performed with. Liverpool's Cavern Club was the city's go-to jazz venue from the late 1950s, having been opened in 1957 by promoter Alan Synter in an old barrel-ceilinged warehouse basement at 10 Mathew Street, modelled on Le Caveau jazz club in Paris. However, by 1961 the packed-out jazz nights were being challenged on Merseyside by the growing rock'n'roll scene erupting from the city's numerous dance halls. New Cavern boss Ray McFall reluctantly withdrew the club's ban on rock'n'roll and slowly began to embrace the beat-group boom, which coincided with the launch of Merseybeat, a fortnightly music paper where the Cavern advertised one of its infamous all-nighters on Saturday, 5 August 1961. The Ivor Novello Award-winning duo of saxophonist Tori Freestone and pianist Alcyona Mick return with their second album as a duo, Make One Little Room An Everywhere, this September, along with some UK live dates. First forming their duo in 2015 after being invited to perform together at the Manchester Jazz Festival, the pair have toured extensively and released their debut LP, Criss Cross, in 2017. The new album draws on a diverse set of influences including English folk, Brazilian, Arabic, free playing, Monk and more, with two special guest vocalists in the form of Brigitte Beraha and Natacha Atlas. This month DJ and broadcaster Gilles Peterson gets to re-release an album that he cites as one of his “all-time top ten jazz albums”. Peterson’s Arc Records will release a special vinyl LP version of Max Roach’s Members, Don't Git Weary on 14 July. Originally recorded in June 1968, Members, Don’t Git Weary reflects the tumult of that year: it was taped under the long shadow cast by the assassinations of US Attorney General Robert Kennedy and civil rights leader Dr Martin Luther King, and is described as “an appeal to keep faith and remain hopeful” as a spiral of violence escalated across America. The disc is flawless: two suites and a ‘phantasy’ flanked by shorter pieces, so redolent of the period they evoke from the late Twenties to the early Fifties – when Coates had to hand a march tune, which the producers of the forthcoming film The Dam Busters (1955) took a liking to. John Wilson’s way with it – letting that tune glide in almost imperceptibly, then the violins decorate it, like sprinkling icing on a cake – typifies his approach. The Brecon Beacons will once again come alive to an eclectic range of high-calibre UK and international names who descend on the picturesque locale in Powys, mid Wales for this summer’s 40th anniversary edition of the Brecon Jazz Festival. Sydney-based trio Brekky Boy are set to visit the UK for the first time following a run of international appearances at SXSW, Montreux and Jazzahead, which have garnered praise and a rapidly growing fanbase. It’s been said before that Bud Powell is by far the most ignored of the early bebop pioneers. Partly because, instead of being an attention-getting hornman, he sat at the piano. But, when you hear of certain live situations where he was more exciting and more intensely creative than Charlie Parker, you know something was going on. Unfortunately, his career and his playing had definite ups and downs, and his early death at age 41 didn’t lead to regular re-evaluation of his best work. August 2022 Day Moon contains a series of compositions by the acclaimed Canadian saxophonist Christine Jensen that reflect her state of mind during the pandemic years. There’s nothing on the recording that represents the isolation experienced during those days by many people quite like Jensen’s lonesome soprano sax on the Shorter-ish ballad ‘Lined’, which mixes ‘Spanish’ modal and contemporary free bop with an eerily penetrating ambience that sets the tone for the rest of the album. It’s the opener to the excellent ‘Quiescence Suite’ which she was recently commissioned to write by New York’s Jazz Coalition. This is followed by the hard bop-ish ‘Twenty Twenty Blues’…

Moreover, while there’s something about Shipp’s cerebral urgency that brings out Perelman’s most dramatic statements, it’s in these less familiar settings that we hear a different side of Perelman: less concerned with extremes; more playful, even. Rec. October-November 1977 Reunion albums rarely rekindle the magic of former glories, often becoming little more than marketing opportunities for the (financially) more rewarding tour to follow. One such album to decidedly buck the trend was the reuniting of Brian Auger and Julie Tippetts (née Driscoll) for Encore, a 1978 release for Warner Bros and the duo’s first for almost a decade since 1969’s excellent Julie Driscoll-Brian Auger & The Trinity double album Streetnoise.
