Since Richard Stallman released the first version of the GNU General Public Licence (GPL) back in 1989, the licence has been a linchpin of open source’s success, by guaranteeing that end users are free to run, study, share and modify any software that comes with the licence. In 2008, a case in the US appeals court (Jacobsen vs Katzer) reiterated that open source license conditions are enforceable as a copyright condition. Basically, the GPL is a licence that depends on copyright law for enforcement, and that it was a copyright licence - not a contract. But as usual with networks, any issues you have can be complicated, so it’s important your VPN has a support system to help out. The default runlevel is specified in the file /etc/inittab , and the line id:5:initdefault: says that this system boots to runlevel 5 by defaults. That can be changed by editing the file or by adding the runlevel to the list of kernel options when booting. If you sometimes want a desktop and sometimes not, you could have separate bootloader menu entries to enable you to choose between them. You can change runlevels after the computer has booted with the telinit command. If you booted to a text console and now want a desktop, you would run, as root $ telinit 5 Systemd doesn’t have runlevels, and its equivalents are targets: multi-user.target is the equivalent of runlevel 3 while graphical.target matches 5. We recently had to create a timelapse video using images, and the first obstacle we faced was converting the timestamps into an ascending numerical order of images. Luckily, and thanks to a little BASH magic, we found a one-line shell script that managed to convert the timestamp images into numbers. We did this with a copy of all the images, to ensure that we had backups. So why did we capture the images with a timestamp? Well, this project can be used in scientific experiments, so capturing the time and date of each image means that we can review when a change took place, say watching cress/sunflowers grow. When mimicking water, or anything that behaves like a fluid, a particles system is used. The point of the system is to mimic real-world physics as close as possible, and the easiest way to understand this is to play with ping-pong balls. Use a bowl and look carefully as they fall into the bowl. Better still, film the balls as they drop and then replay the action frame by frame to get a feel for how they move. A program’s particles system calculates a particle’s trajectory by taking into account the initial speed, rigidity and the speed of other nearby particles. KDE development moves pretty swiftly, in some cases much more swiftly than distros can keep up with. For example, Plasma 5.10 was released at the end of May, and the KDE Applications bundle will be refreshed in August, but the upstream release needs to be carefully packaged and tested by each distribution, and often (say, if an update requires some fundamental bit of Qt to be updated) won’t be included until the next release. Such release frustrations are commonplace, and while they can be assuaged through the use of third-party repositories (such as the Kubuntu Backports PPA) the results may be unstable. ClamAV is the free and open source multithreaded virus scanner developed by Cisco systems after its acquisition from Sourcefire in 2013. It might help to have this installed on the new ISO as well, just in case the reason why you were attempting data recovery in the first place was because of a virus. However unlikely it is that the system is compromised with a virus, having ClamAV pre-installed might be handy along with some other software. Another useful software to have would be AIDE. Note that it only carries out file integrity checks. It can’t check for signs of rootkits or take a look inside the logfiles for anything suspicious. We’ve tried to select VPNs that offer a little more than the usual service, but if you’re happy with the privacy basics, there are plenty of more mainstream alternatives around. Most Linux distro’s desktop do a good job of masking the fact that Linux and Windows are different operating systems. There’s the small matter of the filesystem of course, while Linux is much tighter with security than Windows. Windows has closed the gaps in some areas – file and folder permissions, for example – but in others Linux remains way out in front. For example, you can’t perform an administrative task in Linux – such as installing a program – without supplying your user password. It’s this attention to detail that makes Linux far less vulnerable to malware and hackers. Despite appearances, Linux remains an operating system that performs best from the shell environment. One of the first things init does is mount your filesystems. The kernel will have mounted the root filesystem when it started, but it’s often mounted read-only. Mounting filesystems is controlled by the contents of /etc/fstab , which lists the devices to mount, their mount points and any options to use when mounting them. The root filesystem is remounted read-write, then the other local filesystems, including swap, are mounted. Any filesystems with the noauto option set aren’t mounted and network filesystems are left until the network is available. While this task was traditionally handled by init , things have changed recently. It can no longer be guaranteed that everything needed for early boot is on the root filesystem, particularly on systems that use a separate filesystem for /usr , so…

We’ve talked about what happens when you start your computer from cold, and touched on what happens when you shut down, but that isn’t the only way of turning a computer on and off. Sleep and hibernation are ways of turning a computer off without turning it off. They save the computer’s current state and restore it when it’s turned back on. This saves time on both shutdown and startup and also means you can carry on where you left off with all your applications still open. While originally intended for laptops, sleep and hibernate are becoming increasingly popular for desktops too. In sleep mode, the computer enters a low-power mode where the contents of memory are preserved but most other functions are shut down. This gives instant restarts but…

If you’re looking to wipe Windows from the drive and install Ubuntu on its own, then the process for installing it is straightforward. If there’s nothing on the disk you wish to keep then simply wipe the entire drive during the regular installation process by selecting ‘Erase disk and install Ubuntu’ at the ‘Installation type’ screen and clicking Continue. You’ll then be shown a screen telling you that you’re planning to install Ubuntu on the selected disk (/dev/sda) and that the entire disk will be used. You might think that grass is easy to depict: just draw some bent green lines. The reality is that it seldom looks natural and you certainly don’t want to draw multiple blades of grass yourself. Fortunately, the mathematics are fairly simple which makes it perfect for using the computer to calculate the grassy lawn for us. Adding some randomness completes the natural look. Each straw will be defined by a few angles between the ends, called control points, of an open triangle. When you design the straw you will have two lines connected in the middle, where the ends of the lines are the control points that you can manipulate. Meanwhile, the nascent Unity 8 has been adopted by the community and will evolve accordingly. However, having a Gnome desktop that vaguely resembles one’s former home might provide a pain-free transition to this brave new desktop world. Using the dd command can actually destroy data as opposed to recovering it, but only if used incorrectly. An example of the proper usage can be found in this command # dd if=/dev/target_ partition of=/home/user/partition.image . The if=/ part of the command must be first in executing the command and never the of part. An easy way to remember this is by thinking about the alphabet. I is before O so execute the if section before the of section. Other examples of the dd command are as follows. # dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb would back up the entire contents of /dev/sda/ to drive /dev/sdb/ , but just be sure to verify the drive with the lsblk command. Random numbers are useful in many different areas – one of them is the generation of random strings. As a result, this tutorial will first generate random numbers and use them to generate random strings. At the end of the day these random strings will be used as difficult-to-guess passwords. Strictly speaking, a sequence of numbers is considered to be statistically random when you cannot find any recognisable patterns or regularities in it. Each sequence of random numbers starts with value that is named seed – therefore the seed is the most important property of a random number generator because it initialises the entire process. The seed itself does not need to be random or difficult to guess and is usually generated from the system clock or some other system…

Because the time()utility is used in this tutorial, it would be nice to learn how to interpret its output. So, the time()utility executes the specified command as usual while collecting timing statistics about it. The statistics are printed after the command finishes its execution. The timing statistics come in three categories: real, user and sys. The real value shows the actual time it took the command to execute from start to finish. The user value is the CPU time spent executing code in user-mode, whereas the sys value is the CPU time that the program spent executing code in kernel mode. A Sudovulnerability has been found – and quickly patched – that enabled a local attacker to gain root privileges. The issue, known as CVE-2017-1000367, made it possible for malicious users to run bash commands to overwrite files – even root-owned data. The security researchers from Qualys revealed that, “We discovered a vulnerability in Sudo’s get_process_ttyname() for Linux: this function opens “/proc/[pid]/stat” (man proc) and reads the device number of the tty from field 7 (tty_nr)”. Missing bits Way back in the 1990s I developed The Digital DJ Dance Manager, which ran on a PC with Windows XP Pro. While it was written using Visual Basic 6 I would like to clean it up and rewrite it to run on Linux. The unfortunate thing is that this program enables one to use seven simultaneous displays, which isn’t easily done with any of the Linux distros I’ve seen. While a standard Linux desktop like Ubuntu’s Unity or Gnome provides a familiar point-and-click environment for performing day-to-day tasks, it’s still no match for the power and versatility of the Linux “shell”, the underlying command-line environment. And thanks to the Terminal, you can interact directly with the shell without leaving the desktop. The standard Linux shell utilises a language called BASH to run specific commands using a series of tools. Each command follows the same basic structure: $ utility <command> -option The utility portion of the command is the tool that you wish to run – for example, cd to change directory, or apt-get to trigger the software install tool. When you open the Terminal, you log on to the shell via your own user account. Certain commands require elevated access as the root user (look for a ‘permission denied’ error), and you achieve this by preceding the command with sudo , like so: $ sudo apt-get install vlc You’ll be prompted for your own user account password, and the command will now run – you should now be able to use the sudo command again during the Terminal session without being prompted for your password. Linux is the kernel, that one file in /boot . Everything else, the rest of the GNU/Linux operating system, runs on top of that kernel. The kernel is the core of the OS: it sits between the hardware and the rest of the software and everything passes through it, but it’sn’t the complete OS. So where exactly is the operating system? Remember the root= parameter that the bootloader passed to the kernel? That’s where everything else starts. It starts with a program called init, found in /sbin by default. Init’s the first program the kernel runs, it always has the process ID of 1, everything else is a child of it. The boot process of a modern operating system is certainly complex, even if the specific details are normally hidden out of sight from you. It’s also well tested and most of the time it works just as it should. Of course, “most of the time” usually applies to other people, so what can you do when things go wrong for you? The first step is to disable any splash screen so you can see what is going on. If a particular service is failing, then you can try booting into runlevel 1, single user mode, and then disabling that service. The upshot of this approach is that you may end up with a slightly crippled machine, but you’ll be able to work with it to fix any problems. If you…

When Ubuntu is installed, it adds a boot manager called GRUB, which should detect Windows and enable you to switch between loading Ubuntu and Windows on every startup. Sometimes this doesn’t work – particularly if you’re forced to partition your drive manually – and Windows isn’t detected. Here’s what you can do to try and bring it back. First, boot from your Windows rescue media and choose the option to repair your PC. This brings Windows back, but removes GRUB. Next, boot from your Linux install media and choose Try Ubuntu when prompted. Recently, I wrote some code to use the DS18B20 temperature sensor with Python via a function. The code was based on the code used with the Cam Jam Edu Kits, a code base that I’d used for nearly two years. Now this code was quite large, and only printed the temperature to the Python shell. But after a chance conversation with Ben Nuttall from the Raspberry Pi Foundation I learnt of a library called W1ThermSensor that handled all of the hard work! If you’re looking for a way to quickly rip CDs to your PC from the command line, then try Abcde ( sudo apt install abcde ). It’s basically a script that links other tools – CD-ripping software, encoders, CD identification and tagging tools, and so on – to provide an all-in-one solution to rip your CDs with the minimum of effort. New features are being added to Gnome all the time. One of the latest ones, introduced in Gnome 3.24 is Night Light, which adjusts colour temperatures depending on the time of day and year. Having warmer temperatures outside of daylight hours can reduce eyestrain and tiredness. This functionality has been available through programs light RedShift, but it’s nice to see it as a bona fide Gnome feature now. Especially since RedShiftuses a legacy system tray icon, a habit which doesn’t match the Gnome vision.
