Yes, yes, yes… we know modern luxury cars are safer, quieter, faster and more economical. However, are they more comfortable? We think not, on the evidence we present to you here. We’ve been aboard the modern top-drawer Mercedes-Benz and, while refined it clearly is, the waft of the original 500 SEC is missing. The wide, softly sprung seats or sense of pure luxury are simply not there in the new Mercs. The range of new Bentleys may well be lined with leather from floor to ceiling, but the seats are not the armchairs you get in a Continental Flying Spur. Just look inside one. You don’t get the delicate touches of class like that in a modern car.
