EQUAL PAY This refers to specific roles, ie, that men and women in the same employment performing equal work should receive the same pay. PAY EQUITY This refers to the concept of redressing the income differential by comparing the rates paid to those in female-dominated occupations with those paid in comparable male-dominated jobs and raising women’s pay to match that of men. For example, comparing nurses with probation officers, or education support workers with prison officers, or midwives with mechanical engineers. GENDER PAY GAP According to our Ministry for Women: “The gender pay gap is a high-level indicator of the difference between women’s and men’s earnings. There is no doubt New Zealand’s record is extremely poor when it comes to single use plastic bags. While countries from Belgium to Brazil and Bangladesh to Botswana have introduced legislation to reduce consumption, Kiwis freely use – then bin – a whopping 1.6 billion plastic bags annually; that’s around 350 each per year. According to Greenpeace, each bag is used for an average of 12 minutes, before lingering in the environment for 1000 years before it breaks down.
