HOW IT WORKS: Get clean in a warm shower, then turn off the water and rub the creamy self-tanner all over your body while your skin is still wet. Wait three minutes, then rinse. A new nasal spray could relieve anxiety on the spot. When women with anxiety disorders used it before giving a brief speech and socializing with strangers, 75 percent of them reported decreased anxiety, versus 37 percent of those who used a placebo. The drug, known as PH94B, sparks nerve impulses in the brain within 15 minutes, and its effect is similar to that achieved by 12 weeks of cognitive behavioral therapy in an earlier trial, says Michael Liebowitz, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University. When people express concern about their weight, what’s the best way to respond? A survey of 187 women assessed how often those close to each woman reacted to her weight worries in one of three ways: acceptance (conveying that her weight is acceptable as is), pressure (saying her weight is a problem or offering to help her lose weight), or dismissal (suggesting her weight concerns don’t matter or are relatively insignificant). Among the women who worried the most about their weight, those who often heard acceptance messages were the most likely to lose weight. For those who were less concerned about their weight, pressuring messages were linked with weight gain. Nearly 40 percent of millennials have at least one tattoo, according to a Pew Research poll. And for the first time ever, women are more likely to be inked than men, other researchers have found. A bike tour is a great way to get oriented at the beginning of a trip. Most are fine for beginners—it’s better exercise than sitting on a bus, and you can cover more ground. Location is everything. Choose a tour that starts near the sites you want to see. Cities with a high density of interesting sites in a relatively small geographic area—such as Paris, London, and Washington, D.C.—are ideal for bike tours. Plus, many of these cities have extensive bike routes. Pimp your ride. The perfect urban bike has a big, cushioned seat and wide tires. Check that the bikes look well maintained. Are they clean? Frequent hugs may ward off respiratory infections. Scientists interviewed 406 people daily for two weeks, asking them how often they’d had fights or hugged anyone. The researchers then exposed the participants to a cold virus and monitored them during a quarantine period of up to six days. For infrequent huggers, the more conflicts they reported having with others, the greater their likelihood of infection, but regular huggers were protected from this stress-associated risk, says Sheldon Cohen, a professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Habitual huggers who were infected also had milder illnesses than those who reported occasional or no hugging.
