I’ve always been a bit of a slow guitar player. I came to it a bit later in life — putting me behind from the start — and haven’t really caught up since. The Skyhooks owned the Australian album charts in 1975. Up until that point, most Australian albums struggled to make it to No. 1, let alone stay there. Pipped by UK and US acts, musical soundtracks (we loved musicals), and Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass Band noodling away on the Spanish Flea. Daddy Cool’s Daddy Who? Daddy Cool spent seven weeks there in 1971, but was a rare bright spot in the Aussie album chart almanac. My Windows 10 write-up in AT111 gave it a cautious thumbs up, with a caveat that serious audio users ought to hold off until an initial raft of issues associated with certain Audio and MIDI software and hardware have been resolved. However, since then another issue has emerged that seems to have split opinion between quiet acceptance and total outrage. I’m referring to the Windows 10 habit of sending your personal data back to Microsoft servers. What happens is that when W10 is first installed it assigns each user a unique personalised advertising ID tied to the email address that you’ve used to download W10, and uses this ID from then on to personalise ads. Okay, I think my search is over. I’ve been looking for the cheapest, smallest mixer on the market that I could confidently put on stage and cart around with me without fear of knobs falling off or it sounding like crap. The first day of school can be rough; no friends, unfamiliar surroundings. It’s easy to just duck your head, go to class, and keep the interaction to a minimum. SAE’s Melbourne campus used to be a little like that. Cosy, sure, but light on the breakout areas. It was very much a come-and-go kind of place full of small studios and classrooms attached to a rabbit warren of corridors. But over the last couple of years, SAE has been rebuilding its campus and rethinking the way SAE students learn, with a focus on facilitating collaboration. With a background in industrial design, building a custom studio was always on Jim Moynihan’s bucket list. So when the ideal piece of land presented itself, he seized the opportunity. Nestled in the hills of St Andrews, Victoria, MoonSpoon Studio currently features a 3.5m x 4.5m control room which Jim says is the best sounding room he’s worked in. Primarily functioning as a creative kitchen for his own music, the space was designed from scratch with his needs and great audio in mind. Vertical standing waves are eliminated by a convex-shaped ceiling. Holidays were done differently in 1982; quite a bit differently under Gregory Scott’s guidance. 10-year old Gregory’s parents had bundled the kids into the car for a guided cassette tour of Nova Scotia. Its running commentary steering the Scott’s on a course between significant Canadian landmarks… mostly lighthouses. Young Gregory had just requisitioned his first tape deck but had no material to try out his new contraption with. Then it dawned on him that they’d been listening to a tape all day; a tape he could record on. Blithely he popped his parent’s cassette out of the car console as they pulled in for the day. FRONT PANEL — As with all portable field recorders designed for over-the-shoulder operation, panel space is at a premium and the F8 wastes none of it. It’s a tight fit and therefore a little fiddly, but Zoom has managed to keep it acceptably fiddly. A clearly numbered record-enable button, rotary gain control, six-segment LED level meter and PFL button are all neatly partitioned for each channel and accessible enough. REFACE CP The Reface CP emulates a number of vintage electric pianos including the Fender Rhodes, CP80, Clavinet and Wurlitzer. Of the four, this keyboard probably made the biggest impression. It dynamically responds to touch with a sensitivity and maturity that far surpasses its toy-like exterior. And to really get the most from the sounds, the CP has a sustain pedal port on the back. Don’t let the minimalistic and retro controls fool you — tons of tones can be pulled from this thing. Wind up the Drive knob to get some tasteful break-up when you dig in, or flick the Wah switch for some groovy funk jams. What got me started in audio? ’60s soul music. By 1970 I was doing sound for bands and had built my first loudspeaker. It was all bit of a chance occurrence really. We were listening to music and generally spacing out, when my brother picked up a smallish PA box and faced it into the corner of the room. Of course all the HF content was eliminated but the bass had gone up. Within a matter of days we’d built a 2 × 18-inch box facing into a corner with a lid on it.
