AS well as buyers leaning towards ‘safer’ choices, other factors are at play, car design legend Ian Callum told us.
“High-volume factories are typically restricted to between 12 and 15 colours, and the marketing teams might want two blacks, two silvers, two blues and a white, leaving little room for more interesting options.
“Whites tend to be popular because in certain markets their heat-reflecting properties are valued,” he said. “Black is the safest ‘exotic’ colour. It’s hard to keep clean, but looks fantastic when pristine. Blue is a good automotive colour, green less so because it’s not always considered a ‘mechanical’ hue. Fashion can play a part. At the moment, lighter, solid greys are in vogue, but this tends to change quickly.”
