Everywhere you turn, Anglesey’s history is there, staring you in the face. The imposing nineteenth century Menai Suspension Bridge as you cross to the island off the northwest coast of Wales. The impressive, yet never-finished, thirteenth century Beaumaris Castle. So, it’s easy to understand why Carthago put so much emphasis on sustainability and protecting the environment when the plant was being built. The new€50-million factory, in the northeast Slovenia town of Ormož is highly specialised and is fitted out with state-of-the-art production facilities. Covering an area of approximately 100,000 square metres, it is expected to create 300 jobs by the end of 2024 and has the capacity to build around 3,000 Malibu Vans a year. When we reviewed the first ID Buzz conversion by Love Campers last year we were blown away. With its vibrant yellow and white two-tone finish, we described it as sunshine on wheels. The latest model from the Brighton-based converter is more like a work of art on wheels. And, with a remarkable vinyl wrap based on an original work by Cornish-based artist, Zee van Gils, it is somehow even cooler than its predecessor. Like many converters, Mark James first started building campervans because he couldn’t find one that suited his specific needs. Everything he saw was either too expensive or too old. So, with a background in electronic engineering and DIY skills, he decided to take matters into his own hands. A few months later, Mark was the proud owner of a self-converted Vauxhall Movano. That was in 2013. We ran from the storm. A black-bellied gale blew our ferry from South Uist, clear across the Minch and into the arms of Uig harbour. As Duncan eased Frank, our Peugeot Boxer campervan, off the boat and into Uig Bay campsite, we breathed a sigh of relief that our Skye adventure was under way. We had sea kayaks on the roof and hiking gear in the garage, a mountain of maps and a pocketful of plans. HI Discovering what’s on our doorstep quickly became one of the unofficial taglines of my full-time travels with my husband and three cats. But then came Covid and the world – and the world of motorhomes – changed forever. Dethleffs’ first campervan under its own brand name is now coming to the UK. Over the past 17 years, more than 55,000 campervans have been designed, developed and built for a number of other marques at the company’s Isny factory, but only now is there a camper wearing the ‘D’ logo. In Germany, there’s a Ford-based model, while Erwin Hymer Group’s first fruits of its heavily publicised new relationship with VW has resulted in the Globetrail Performance based on the Crafter. WOOLLYHATZ HELEN BOBBLE HAT There’s something quite wonderful about a bobble hat – yes, there might be more functional designs out there in all ranges of technical wool (whatever that really means), but there’s nothing like an old-school woolly hat topped with an utterly useless pompom to make you feel young again. So, when we came across this campervan-themed one from Woollyhatz we were tickled. The fact that it was worn by comedian, Susan Calman, on her second Grand Day Out TV series, is neither here nor there. However, it does explain this hat’s unusual name (Susan’s campervan is called Helen after her favourite actress, of the Mirren persuasion).
