It was a long drive from our home in Buckinghamshire to the Gower Peninsula, along narrow roads with traffic congestion. We arrived at our campsite and were delighted by the seafront location, right next to the beach. Skysea Caravan Site, in Port Eynon, is a great spot for exploring this beautiful part of Wales. The village had an art exhibition on the day we arrived, so we moseyed down to the village hall, to have a look at the paintings and drawings of local places by local people. This trip is confusing me. One moment I feel like I’m in New Zealand, surrounded by dense tree ferns in a damp and mossy glade above a waterfall. A couple of hours later I’m bombarded by ker-chings of arcade games and the greasy smells of hot dogs and burgers, those unmistakeable trademarks of many a British seaside resort. I’m especially disoriented looking down on a quintessential English village with a church and thatched cottages. Apier, a poet, puzzling plaques, poignant letters, seals and sea lavender; we explore a coastline packed with fascination. This is a dog-friendly week in Lincolnshire, based one mile inland from the coast at Sutton on Sea. From the Humber estuary in the north to the Wash south of Skegness, the coast is generally a broad beach. Near towns – Mablethorpe, Sutton on Sea, Chapel St Leonards and Skegness – dog walking is restricted, but on our campsite there seemed to be even more dogs than normal because owners know how many wonderful miles of sand are available for dogs to run free. Living close to Winchester, we decide it’s high time we walked the South Downs Way from Eastbourne to Winchester. Armed with the invaluable A-Z walking map and the Trailblazer guide, the long walk started in Eastbourne. The guidebooks assume you will walk from west to east, so we quickly get used to reading the guide backwards – not quite literally, of course! Taking the inland route, we soon leave the bustle of Eastbourne behind, climbing steeply through woods and up onto the chalk downs. This part of the walk is the only one where the signage leaves us debating the right path and we are glad of our map, but we are soon over the top of the downs. Grantham, a historic market town in Lincolnshire, offers visitors a blend of heritage, countryside charm and cultural attractions. Sir Isaac Newton was educated at Grantham, and the area celebrates his legacy at nearby Woolsthorpe Manor (owned by the National Trust), where he first discovered gravity.
