HOW MANY MORE massive security breaches can we tolerate? It seems a month can’t go by without reports of another large hack attack. This time, it’s Yahoo! in the spotlight, with news of a breach that has seen 500 million accounts compromised.
According to the firm’s chief information security officer, Bob Lord, “the account information may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords (the vast majority with bcrypt), and encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers”.
As well as the scale of the theft, there are two shocking details about this hack. First, Yahoo! reported that the hack took place more than 18 months ago, at the end of 2014. Second, the internet firm said it attributes the attack to a “state-sponsored actor”. In other…
