“With so much unpleasantness in the world at the moment, and the UK coming to the end of a long winter, I wanted to stitch something to lift my spirits, and also that of a good friend, who is housebound. I chose the narcissus to stitch, firstly because it’s the birth flower for March, along with the daffodil, which symbolises happiness as well as friendship and compassion, but also because the daffodil is the national flower of Wales, which is celebrated on St David’s Day, 1 March. The Welsh word for daffodil is cenhinen Bedr, translating literally to ‘Peter’s Leek’ – (who exactly Peter is, I’m not sure), but the leek has been a symbol of Wales since the 16th century.
