Middelburg is a junction town in the Eastern Cape Karoo, at the intersection between the N9, the N10 and the drop-dead-gorgeous R56 that takes you east to KZN via Elliot, Maclear and Matatiele. It’s likely that you’ll pull into town hungry, and Die Kliphuis Koffiekan is just the place to rectify that.
The unassuming exterior on Meintjies Street hides a lovely courtyard around the back where you can have a cup of coffee and a waffle with ice cream and syrup (R30), or something more substantial like the Mega Breakfast (eggs, bacon, tomato, pork banger, chips – everything; R80).
