The bad news African penguins and West Coast rock lobster populations in South African waters are decreasing at an alarming rate, according to WWF South Africa’s 2018 report on the local ocean economy. The penguin population is threatened due to food shortages and the effect of climate change (the water is getting warmer and less salty and fish species along our coast are moving south); rock lobsters are declining due to illegal and unregulated fishing practices, and poor management of the fishing industry. The good news The numbers of both hake species found in our waters – deep-water hake and shallow-water hake – have strengthened and fishing is sustainable. JOHANNESBURG TRAMWAY NETWORK, CIRCA 1910 If you wanted to impress your girlfriend on Valentine’s Day in 1906, you would have taken her for a ride on the brand-new electric tram in Johannesburg. It was the first time that electric trams were used in the city; before 14 February all the tramcars had been horse-drawn. The new electric tram service ran from Market Square (pictured) to the railway bridge in Siemert Road. The first horse-drawn tramcar left Market Square in 1891. By 1893, there were about 18 km of tram routes. The service was limited to the town centre, Fordsburg, Braamfontein, Jeppe, Belgravia and Doornfontein. When you hike the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, you mostly follow the course of the river. On the fourth day, however, you can cut across some of the bends to save time and distance. Away from the water, it hits home that you’re in a desert. The sun seems hotter and you’re dwarfed by rock mountains and barren plains. Night has fallen over Botswana. Only the Milky Way lights up the sky. Under a mosquito net, two newlyweds are asleep in the Kalahari veld, between the towns of Ghanzi and Kang. WOODLANDS, RHEENENDAL Knysna, with its iconic lagoon and the Heads that guard the lagoon mouth, is probably the Garden Route’s biggest tourist magnet. But there’s a strong case to be made for sidestepping the busy town centre and booking your next stay in a nearby patch of indigenous forest. Turn off the N2 onto the Rheenendal Road (about 8 km west of Knysna) and you’ll find lots of accommodation options that are no more than 15 minutes from town. Animal fun in Madagascar Madagascar has always been on our bucket list. Your article “ Mora mora in Madagascar” in go! #129 gave us the final push. We contacted Madagascar Island Safaris and off we went on a week-long paddling trip. We slept in a different location each night, snorkelling with turtles and eating fish we’d caught off the kayaks. The Blyderivierspoort Hiking Trail has been reopened – once again, you can explore this scenic corner of Mpumalanga on foot. The trail was closed in 2015 for renovations. The three-day trail runs from Paradise Camp on the God’s Window loop (R534) near Graskop, to the Bourke’s Luck Potholes, where you’ll stay on day three. Have you been lucky enough to see a Sharpe’s grysbok in the wild? Are you sure it was a grysbok and not the more common steenbok? These small antelope are easily confused. Here are a few ways to tell them apart: The first distinction you should be able to make is between the two species of grysbok found in South Africa: Cape grysbok and Sharpe’s grysbok. It’s simple: You can tell which grysbok it is based on where you are – their distribution ranges don’t overlap. Sharpe’s grysbok is slightly more common and confined to the dry regions north of the Soutpansberg and within the Kruger Park north of the Olifants River. LIONS VS BUFFALO, KRUGER PARK Having just hiked the Sweni Wilderness Trail, we treated ourselves to a couple of nights at Hamilton’s Tented Camp south of Satara. On the day of our departure, we decided to get an early start as we had a long journey back to our home in Somerset West. Our last stop in the park was Shimangwaneni Dam, where we watched the waterbirds as they fussed around on the banks. But this wasn’t to be our farewell scene. After about 20 minutes, a young male lion sauntered out of the bush, stretching languidly in the morning sun. The rest of the pride soon emerged to assemble on the dam wall 1 .
