All I want is a little house by the sea. It could have happened during that big Covid-19 exodus from cities to regional centres, but the thing is, the Inside Out team really does need to be at our city HQ on a regular basis. Tucked into the dunes and surrounded by evergreen conifers in the quiet hamlet of Amagansett, just two hours’ drive from New York city, this home is an original design by the late American architect Andrew Geller, who was also known as the ‘architect of happiness’. Geller was prolific in the 1960s and ’70s, designing a series of homes that embodied postwar ingenuity and optimism with an inexpensive design language characterised by origami-like folds and angles that, although structurally challenging, are whimsical in feel. We drove past this long, pristine beach – there was nothing here at the time except a small caravan with a sales guy on duty – and I immediately fell in love,” recalls South African Ronelle Bester of first sighting this block in Dwarskersbos on the Cape’s increasingly popular West Coast. “We decided on the spot to buy a plot for a weekend getaway.” The location could not have been a better choice for Ronelle, her husband Möller and their two young sons, Julian and Josua, because the family actually lives on a farm in Moorreesburg, which is only about an hour away by car. Jodi Hughes and her husband Simon were living in Newcastle with their three young daughters when they started to feel restless. The pair had both grown up in rural NSW and were pining for wide open spaces. But they also loved being close to the ocean and were reluctant to move too far inland. Their solution: relocate to the NSW South Coast, where farmland and rolling hills press up against lovely beaches. It’s no secret that my house is something of a second showroom, with its own revolving door.
