After creating a luxury weekender in the grounds of their beautiful weatherboard home at Red Hill, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Richard and Becky Bournon were keen to do it again. Small gardens are the way of the future. As blocks of land shrink and houses become bigger, sadly, it’s the garden that suffers – so you need to get the space right and make it feel as large as possible. The first thing I like to do in a small space is to blur the boundary edges of the garden. When the eye is drawn to a definite boundary, such as the point where fences meet in corners and where they touch the ground, the space immediately feels smaller. Well-positioned patches of greenery will soften the visible edges of the space and remove obvious sightlines, ensuring that the space appears larger to the eye. Gardens can be soothing and transportive, no matter the size, and the cosy courtyard owned by interior designer Lara Ette and her family is no exception. When Adam Leng picks up a brush and starts painting, he’s not just creating art. He’s also looking inside himself and exploring how culture, family history and personal identity all fit together. Painting is a relatively new pursuit for the young artist, who began working with acrylic paints on cotton and linen in early 2022. Nevertheless, he has always been a creator of art. “Before painting, I wrote a lot of music and dabbled in all sorts of multimedia forms,” he explains. “Art has always helped me to break down and unpack broader ideas. When Jessica purchased this third-floor apartment in Sydney’s eastern suburbs in 2020, it was in dire need of a renovation. Interior designer Kristy McGregor had worked with Jessica’s family on various projects in the decade before, so she was Jessica’s first choice to oversee the project. “It was a deceased estate and no work had been done on the place for more than 20 years,” says Kristy. “Jessica wanted to update the interior to create a luxe new home for herself and her daughter, Charlotte. “The apartment was almost unliveable in its original state. Kristy Plumridge admits that friends thought she and her husband Neil were slightly mad when they bought a 60-hectare farm in Victoria’s west Gippsland region. “We are both city folk from corporate life who have zero farming background,” says Kristy. “But we immediately fell in love with the rolling green hills and the lushness of the landscape.” As inexperienced as they were, they didn’t buy the land on a whim back in 2015.
