Gardens can be soothing and transportive, no matter the size, and the cosy courtyard owned by interior designer Lara Ette and her family is no exception. Tucked away behind their contemporary home in the eastern Sydney suburb of Waverley, the inviting space features an azure, Zellige-tiled pond, earthy pink walls and an exotic array of cacti that wouldn’t look out of place in a Moroccan riad.
“Like most homes in this area, we’ve got neighbours left, right, behind and in front,” says Lara, who lives there with her husband Greg and their sons, Jonny, nine, and Ryan, six, and Martini, a cocker spaniel. “Luckily, the architects were able to design a space that allows you to feel somewhat on your own.”
