And so, this is my last editor’s letter, and for the editorial team, our last issue. These are our last layouts, our last photo shoots, the last of our gorgeous house stories and our last-ever cover. It’s been 24 glorious years of print for Inside Out, celebrating more than two decades of Australian design, style and renovations over 236 issues. That’s a lot of inspiration and information. Our pages have also reflected the lives of the people who work here and have pulled this magazine together every month. They’ve been touched by our own renovation dreams, our new babies, kitchens on a budget, every paint colour crisis, HSC trials, landscaping challenges, old dogs, new puppies, and plenty of house-moving dramas – it’s all been there on our pages. The owner of this house knew it was ‘the one’ as soon as she saw it – only it wasn’t for sale. “I’d seen it listed and thought it looked great, but then it disappeared off the market,” she recalls. So, when she and her family, including two teenage daughters, couldn’t find anywhere to buy in Sydney’s Summer Hill, they decided to rent somewhere as a stop gap. During their rental hunt, they drove past the house they had seen online. “I went through the front gate and was peering through the windows, and suddenly the front door opened. After all, aren’t our bathrooms the most private spaces in our homes, where visitors rarely tread, and where we spend our all-too-scarce solo moments? The best window furnishings perform three separate functions simultaneously, says Michelle Begley, director and window furnishing designer at Nuevue. “Well-designed window furnishings should function seamlessly, fulfil an aesthetic purpose and create a mood. Dressing a window is quite a technical process that can make a success, or failure, of an interior.” Function and aesthetics are largely gathered from the client’s brief, says Michelle. Functional considerations relate to light control and aspect, protection against the elements, and privacy. Aesthetically, choosing appropriate pattern, texture and colour will enhance a room’s best features. Eliza Gosse is an aficionado of Australian mid-century modern design. It informs her personal style and was a foundation influence in her paintings, but is not the only one. “People do tend to pigeonhole me and say, ‘She just paints mid-century modernist architecture,’ but it’s so much broader. THE CONCEPT This room was designed for two siblings aged seven and four (a boy and a girl) by Sydney-based Lara Ette. “We wanted it to be joyful and fun, and not too serious,” she says, referencing the vibrant colour choices on the cabinetry and walls. SPACE PLANNING The space is very long, so Lara came up with a plan to balance it out. “I decided to break up the run of cabinetry with some open shelving and small drawers,” she shares. “It’s also really nice for the kids to have display areas for their things.” INSIDE STORY Along the bottom of the unit are wide, deep drawers. “I’m doing this more regularly,” says Lara. “They’re great for storing less-used items such as winter woollens or linen. Since moving to Australia from his native Brazil, Ivan Ferreira has been taking the Sydney flower scene by storm. Having worked in his family’s event and party-planning business back home, the choice to enrol in a floristry course through Pearsons School of Floristry was an easy one. “I’m all about the little details, and floristry combines my interests of interior design and decoration,” says Ivan, who credits leading florist Ferdinando De Freitas of Garlands for giving him his start. Fragrant eucalyptus, a cup of tea in the sun, afternoon light casting a glow over a pastiche of mauve, yellow, tangerine and silver... there are plenty of glimmers in Kylie Trounson’s garden. However, this wasn’t the case when the lawyer and writer moved into the double-fronted Edwardian home, located in Melbourne’s southeast, with her young family in 2019. What the north-facing backyard lacked in shade, it made up for in weeds and overgrown grass, while an enormous, unfenced pool took up most of the outdoor space. “There was one sad apple tree, a jacaranda, an ugly tin shed containing the pool equipment, and some yuccas along the back fence,” says Kylie.
