EDITOR’S LETTER I say this a lot, but there’s no greater joy than making things. Having an idea journey from your head into reality gives you ownership of what you do and of yourself. It’s particularly top of mind here at the shows in Europe as I navigate scores of influencers who flip their hair while walking backward and forward in the street trying to capture the “perfect shot,” like an Instagram Boomerang in real life. (By the way, if you’re not following @influencersinthewild, you’re not really living.) Anyway, it’s something I’m getting more stubborn about by the minute at InStyle. I want to celebrate women for what they create and what they represent. We’re not falling for large Instagram followings in the hope that a little of that…shine?…will rub…

Who knew Katie Holmes was a diehard Radiohead fan? Once she arrived on set for our shoot at a sprawling estate in Tarrytown, N.Y., she couldn’t get enough of the band’s seminal song, “Creep,” which played on repeat all day. The tune’s classic refrain, “I don’t belong here,” couldn’t have been less true for the actress, who was totally in her element while modeling sexy dresses by Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino. When I started out in entertainment, I was a mess of a 23-year-old with no clue what I wanted to do. Well-meaning adults told me to follow my “bliss.” This confounded me. Where do I start? Long before YouTube or beauty blogs even existed, Molly R. Stern was developing her own makeup tutorials. But for the interior designer and founder of lifestyle site EyeSwoon, the choice was easy: The master bathroom wins, hands down. “It’s rare to have a freestanding bathtub and a fireplace in a bathroom, and I wanted to amplify the romanticism of the space. Growing up in England, I was raised as a Roman Catholic, and the word “ambition” was bad, almost sinful. To want something better than what you already had was not OK. And so, up until I made The English Patient [in 1996], I stifled my ambition to be an actress. That may sound crazy, but it’s true. These days my principal ambition is to get satisfaction and excitement and nourishment from work and also leave enough space for a fulfilling family life. WHERE TO STAY Our home base was La Colombe d’Or, a hotel known for its treasure trove of work from artists like Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso.
