I never expected to be a choreographer. But I had an itch to perform from a young age, and by the time I was 12, that love had turned to dance. Growing up in New Zealand, I found my main source of inspiration in watching music videos on MTV and was pretty much self-taught. I dropped out of school at 15 and decided to pursue my dream, but there weren’t many dance studios or all-girl dance crews around, so I started my own, called ReQuest, with four friends. If I’m being honest, my style hasn’t changed since I was a teenager and walked into my first vintage store. That was it. Nobody was getting me out of my bell-bottoms. And I think that’s one of the reasons why [director] Cameron Crowe wanted me to play Penny Lane in Almost Famous. I was 21 at the time, and I loved to sing and play guitar.
