What does it mean to you to be a badass? When I was a kid, being a badass meant you got a lot of spanking. But now it means you’re not going to let anyone take anything from you and you’re going to fight for what you think is right. A badass is someone who is informed, willing to take action, and willing to do good in that action. Also, having minimal fear. A lot of people tell me I’m fearless, which is not true. Fear is the biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome. I still have a bit of fear about false information appearing real, so I’m always keeping that in check. When do you feel most badass these days? How would you describe your regimen? Creative, experimental, and low-maintenance. I find real calm and solace in my routine. There’s so much in the outside world that we’ve been powerless about. Having time to go through my steps is very meditative. At the beginning of lockdown, I stopped wearing makeup or brushing my hair. Then I realized I had to start doing things to feel better. Even if I wasn’t leaving the house, it really cheered me up to put on a bright lipstick or eyeliner. It made me understand that beauty lifts my mood. It’s for me, not anyone else. Like many of us, women’s advocate Dee Poku Spalding faced the challenges of working from home when the country went on lockdown in March. As the founder of two organizations that rely heavily on in-person meetups—WIE Suite, a membership network for female leaders, and Black Women Raise, an organization that helps Black female entrepreneurs grow their businesses—she was forced to rethink how she operated. “We’re working to ensure that women thrive in leadership positions and help them do business together in a more transactional way,” Poku Spalding says. “Prior to this past spring, we held events where women could get to know each other at dinners or intimate events. Since Uzo Aduba arrived in L.A. to film the highly anticipated reboot of HBO’s In Treatment, she has spent almost all her waking hours on set. The series, which starred Gabriel Byrne from 2008 to 2010, returns in its fourth season with Aduba as the new head therapist.
