For many, action stops and starts with first-person shooters. The standout title this year was Battlefield 6 (PC, PS5, XSX), which delivers huge 128-player battles with destructible environments, class-based teamplay and vehicle-based warfare. A mix of first-person shooting and third-person exploration puzzle solving, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond sees our heroine land on the new planet of Viewros. Here, amidst ancient Chozo ruins, a rogue AI called The Sphere is manipulating the planet’s systems to weaponise and corrupt fauna.
