System76 has shared initial work to support Coreboot on its Kaby Lake-and Whiskey Lake-based laptops. Coreboot replaces the proprietary firmware that ships with motherboards and CPUs, circumventing most of the controversial Intel Management Engine (ME). While PureOS comes preinstalled on the Librem 13, it might not be to your liking. For example, Steam is a problem to install, as are several other digital distribution services. The built-in Software tool, meanwhile, offers apps and games that won’t run. This might be down to the reliance on open source drivers, but regardless, it can prove to be a bit of a problem. Our test device proved impervious to any form of serious benchmarking, partially due to PureOS, and partially to the Intel HD 620 GPU. As such, while the hardware itself is powerful enough, it makes sense to opt for an alternative Linux distro. So-called paint packages are the most commonly used type of graphic editing software. But while they’re perfect for touching up photos, they’re far from ideal for creating diagrams and illustrations. The snag with using paint software for this purpose is that they work at the level of pixels. A much better solution is to use a drawing package, otherwise known as vector-based graphics software, which works at the level of picture elements such as lines, circles, boxes and text. The waters have been muddied by some paint software appearing to offer similar functionality, but if you want full control over the drawing process, there’s no better option than vector-based software. Although we’re looking at vector-based graphics packages instead of the bitmapped software used for editing photos, there are times when some limited support of bitmaps is useful, say for including photos of staff in an organisational chart. All the software reviewed here enables you to import bitmapped images for this purpose, and the basic editing functions available enable you to move, resize and rotate them. Some software also enables you to crop images but, even if there’s no specific crop bitmap function, with most reasonably featured vector graphics software you’ll be able to find some way of achieving this. While we wouldn’t recommend using any vector-based software for dedicated image editing use – something like GIMP is far more appropriate – some of the packages included here do offer a…

Most 8-bit machines relied on the CPU for audio, making do with simple ‘bleep bloop’ noises, the Commodore was designed to have a strong, dedicated sound chip from the beginning – the SID 6581. The SID (Sound Interface Device) was developed by a musician, Ensoniq’s Robert Yannes. Distinctly unimpressed with the primitive existing computer audio, he designed a multi-channel audio chip that simply destroyed the competition. Sporting three channels, each has an ADSR envelope generator and the ability to apply audio filters. Interestingly, a by-product of hardware imperfections resulted in effectively another channel, allowing for 4-bit digital samples, which was often used to synthesise speech. Used all over the world, DOSBox is a DOS emulator that runs everything and is available on a zillion platforms. It will undoubtedly be in your distro’s repositories, and you won’t need a BIOS file for it. However, it does take a few steps to get it going like a normal DOS machine. We won’t show you how to use DOS, but we will show you how to set up your C: drive. DOS used a simple file called autoexec.bat to run its startup commands, but DOSBox doesn’t actually have this file, nor does it start with a C: drive. Wander down the Grand Arcade in the centre of Cambridge and among all the Sports Direct buyouts and store closures, it’s refreshing to see a brand opening a high street shop for the first time, from the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Crontab field separation has the first field holding the minute at which to run, from 0-59. The second field is the hour to run, 0-23. The day of the month is the next field, followed by the month field, limited to 12 numeric values. The day of the week field is next, with values starting at 0 for Sunday. If the VM isn’t frequently used, the IP address served by DHCP may change. To resolve this, exclude the IP from the router as mentioned. Setting up the IP is as simple as opening /etc/network/interfaces as the root user and modifying the line that ends in dhcp, changing it to static. Doing this also means the server needs to know its IP details. Three lines are needed: to configure the IP address, the network mask, the gateway and the required DNS entries. The first line should be addr= followed by the IP address of the VM. The second line netmask is the network mask. For example netmask=255.255.255.0. Western Digital announced it would be building its own processor, based on the open source RISC-V architecture, back in December 2018. These Register-Transfer Level (RTL) abstractions enable advanced users to model the CPU using the System on a Chip (SoC) modelling tool Verilator. Grants Paragon Software right to furnish drivers upon OEMs. Back in October 2018, Microsoft joined the Open Invention Network, granting it royalty-free access to some 60,000 patents. Missing from this portfolio, however, was the exFAT patent that covers the modernised version of the FAT filesystem which originated in MS-DOS. ExFAT is valuable IP – it’s used for high-capacity USB drives and SD cards, and commonly supported on set-top boxes, NAS boxes, media centres and the like – so it’s unsurprising MS didn’t offer it as a charitable donation. Linus Torvalds announced what is likely to be the final RC (Release Candidate) for the 5.0 kernel cycle. Linux 5.0-rc7 includes relatively few driver and platform fixes, typically for this late in the release process. As we covered previously, the new major version numbering is more about convenience rather than some earth-shattering new set of features. In fact, 5.0 is on the smaller side compared to other recent releases. Perhaps the most interesting features added to 5.0 are the Energy Aware Scheduler (EAS) patches. Q I’ve just installed Ubuntu (18.10) for the first time in at least 10 years and headed straight to the software update. I can see Main, Universe, Restricted and Multiverse are all selected as default. Also, Important security updates, Recommended updates and Unsupported updates are selected as default. When considering stability and security, is it recommended to leave all of these options as default? I’m sure I remember having Universe and Multiverse de-selected, and to have ‘unsupported’ updates being installed feels a bit risky! The most obvious differentiator between vector drawing packages is their more advanced graphics features, so it could be argued that any testing strategy should concentrate of these. However, a significant majority of users have little need for many of the more esoteric features; what they really need are just the basic tools for creating illustrations and diagrams for technical, scientific or business applications. This, therefore, has been our emphasis. That doesn’t mean, however, that all software is equal. While the basic drawing tools might be largely similar, products differ significantly in areas related to productivity, so our testing has also considered this aspect. For general purpose use, we find it hard to believe that one of the packages reviewed here won’t fit the bill, but if you do want to delve a bit further, other free options – which either run under Linux or are accessed via a browser – include Dia, Method Draw, sK1 and SVG-edit. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the colossus that is MAME – the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. The hardware of older arcade machines could vary wildly between games, so an emulator was needed that covered all these different machines. MAME differs from other emulators in that it uses a modular approach, where individual cores are installed that power and control different machines. This approach is an effective new path that may prove to be more reliable than constantly writing new emulators with different interfaces. Out of all the consoles we could have covered, we chose the PlayStation because of its influence on emulator history. Initially emulators for the PlayStation were buggy, unprofessional and just too niche to worry Sony. However, two polished commercial titles would completely rock the boat and re-shape history: Connectix Virtual Game Station and bleem!. In the mid-to-late ’90s, the Macintosh was starved of games and emulators were becoming more popular. Connectix was a small company with a talent for virtualisation, which was working on a PlayStation emulat Mac, Virtual (VGS). First, let’s make this clear. Only work with high voltages if you know exactly what you are doing as you can be seriously injured or killed! Most people who are new to IR photography will start with the camera they already have, and we saw in the main part of this article how to check that it’s IR sensitive. Fortunately, most cameras and phones are at least partially suitable but if yours isn’t, or it doesn’t allow you to use a more aggressive IR pass filter such as a Wratten 87, it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune to find an alternative. Sadly, since Ubuntu 16.04 was released, updates to SANE appear to have partially broken scanning capabilities in Ubuntu. Many scanners that worked fine in earlier versions of Ubuntu no longer work in later versions, and both our test scanners (Dell B1265dnf and Epson Perfection V370) fell into this category. One of the great features of VirtualBox (and most other hypervisors) is the ability to use snapshots. Snapshots enable you to create a point-in-time copy of the virtual machine state. For example, prior to performing an upgrade step or change (on any VM, not just this one), taking a snapshot enables you to go back to the moment prior to the snapshot creation. It is a really valuable tool that is worth learning how to use. The snapshot management tools in VirtualBox can be found under the ‘Machine tools’ section on the right-hand side of the application. Nextcloud’s installation is well-documented and is fairly easy to follow. However, if you’re pressed for time or aren’t well versed with the Linux CLI, Nextcloud also officially supports installation via the snap universal package format. Installing Nextcloud via snap isn’t just incredibly easy but is also very secure, since it runs in a sandboxed environment. Before you begin, make sure your Ubuntu Server installation has a static IP address. On an older Ubuntu installation, you’ll also have to install snapd with sudo apt install snapd . TensorFlow isn’t optimised to use your hardware efficiently when analysing images, however, so to make full use of your hardware, use OpenCV. Proposed changes to Google’s Chromium browser could spell trouble for ad blockers and other content-filtering plugins. The changes, first tabled in October 2018, centre on the Manifest v3 proposal for Chromium’s Extension platform – and thus by (arrg!–Ed) extension, Chrome and soon Microsoft Edge. Manifest files specify the permissions and resources associated with a given browser extension. The salient change is to the webRequest API, which hitherto has allowed extensions to intercept and modify, or block entirely, network requests. We try to avoid discussing vulnerabilities by referring to their logos or flashy titles, but when they reference opera-singer-fronted metal band System of a Down, we can’t help but give them a nod. The three vulnerabilities, collectively titled System Down, were found by Qualys and all lie in systemd’s journalling mechanism. Two of the vulnerabilities are memory-corruption bugs, which involve clashing the stack with an attacker-controlled memory region, and the other is an out-of-bounds read. Fedora and openSUSE compile their software with GCC’s stack-clash protection option, but otherwise the vulnerabilities have been present for at least three years. Successful exploitation of all three vulnerabilities can provide a local root shell in a matter of minutes. APFS is a relatively new filesystem used on contemporary Mac systems, optimised for use on flash-based memory devices. Code: https://github.com/eafer/linux-apfs. Peter Xu posted a patch series titled “userfaultfd: write protection support”. These ‘uffd-wp’ patches enable applications to tightly control and monitor use of memory, such as by virtual machines. Most of the time, Linux and its software is well-behaved, but there are times when you just want to kill a program. It may be that you started a long and resource intensive task at the wrong time, or it may be that a program has experienced an unscheduled termination (crashed) and left its window(s) on your desktop. If you started the program from a terminal, you can usually kill it with Ctrl+C, but there are other options. Sometimes a program has crashed so that it will not respond to a Ctrl+C – it needs a more brutal approach. Realistically, the only reason to create a diagram or illustration is so that you can display it online or insert it into a document, so it’s essential that you can save or export it in a suitable format. Similarly, if you want to work on a drawing someone has created or, perhaps, include a third-party image in your drawing, the range of supported import formats becomes important. Nearly all the reviewed software uses a proprietary format for saving drawings, which isn’t too helpful – except in the case of LibreOffice Draw, because its native format is recognised by other LibreOffice applications. Emulation is best known for its use in playing old video games on modern systems, but it’s also used in many areas of computing, with many different purposes. If you want to try your hand at thermal IR photography, add-ons for phones are now available that enable you to photograph heat. They’re expensive, but a lot cheaper than dedicated thermal IR cameras. Before buying an IR pass filter, you might like to try the cheap option of a piece of exposed, developed colour negative film, or unexposed, developed slide film, if you have any knocking about. They work as IR pass filters, but the cut-off wavelength is about 870nm, so this won’t work with all cameras. When you scan a photo or document, you do it at a specific resolution, measured in dpi (dots per inch). The more dots per inch in your scan, the more detailed – and larger – your image. By default, Simple Scan scans documents at 150 dpi and photos at 300 dpi, which will produce a digital image the same size as the original (typically A4 for documents, 6x4 inches for photos). This is sufficient in most cases, but there may be times when you wish to blow up a photo to a larger size – for example when scanning in smaller photos of the sort often found in family history collections. The static nature of these files means that plug-ins often wont work. For any sites that must include a comments section, it’s possible to add third-party plug-ins that provide the same facility. That local virtual machine is critical – there is no way to put the HTML back into WordPress. While Nextcloud has a well-rounded yet intuitive graphical interface, it also includes a powerful command line interface (CLI) that can be used to control all aspects of the installation. Nextcloud’s CLI is a PHP script that gets its name from its origins in ownCloud and is called occ (for ownCloud Console). To use occ, move to the Nextcloud base directory (such as /var/www/nextcloud), and then run it with the web server’s owner (usually www-data or apache) in order to maintain the correct permissions on the Nextcloud files and folders.
