Dr. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovers the X-ray. While testing whether energy beams could pass through glass, Röntgen discovers a fluorescent green light that can pass through most substances while leaving shadows of solid objects. In 1901, he wins the first Nobel Prize in physics for his discovery.
November 16, 1896 The first hydro-electric power plant in Niagara Falls goes into operation. Built by engineer Nikola Tesla, the plant uses the natural flow of the waterfall to create electricity for parts of New York.
November 5, 1911 The first transcontinental flight across America is completed. The flight takes off from Sheepshead Bay, New York, and lands 5,499 km (3,417 mi.) away in Pasadena, California.
