THE A49, IN western England, is a north-south route that crosses the Welsh Marches. It runs north from Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire, linking the medieval market towns of Hereford, Leominster, Ludlow, Shrewsbury and Whitchurch, continuing through Cheshire to Warrington and Wigan before ending just south of Bamber Bridge at its junction with the A6.
From the ancient market town of Ross-on-Wye to Warrington on the banks of the River Mersey, the A49 is a pleasant country drive alongside the hills of the English/Welsh borders, winding its way up through Herefordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire, coming within a couple of miles of the border near Whitchurch.
