MAJOR NEW RESEARCH commissioned by The Camping and Caravanning Club and undertaken by a team of academics at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and Sheffield Hallam University has revealed how camping in the great outdoors improves people’s wellbeing and mental health. The Outjoyment Report surveyed a cohort of almost 11,000 people, assessing attitudes to all types of camping from caravanning to glamping. You’d be forgiven for saying, “Of course, camping makes you happy!” and you’d be right. But having credible, independent, scientific data proving the benefits of camping and being outdoors will be hugely useful in future lobbying for pro-camping legislation and policy across a spectrum of areas of influence - everything from health to the natural environment. WHAT TO DO when you want to go away exploring in the dark days of November? For us, the default is to throw on an extra layer, waterproofs and a scarf, and just get out there for a pleasurable spot of puddle jumping and mud splashing. Thousands flock to the NEC show MORE THAN 104,000 visitors came to see the Motorhome and Caravan Show during six days in October, event organiser NCC has revealed. Final visitor figures show that 104,521 people came through the doors of the show, the first time it has been held at the NEC at that time of year since 2019. NCC Events director Terry Dullaghan said, “We are over the moon to be back with the biggest audience the show has ever seen. We’ve seen a huge influx of people who have a brand-new appreciation for the outdoors and exploring what’s right on their doorstep.” Several manufacturers at the event, including Swift Group and Vantage Motorhomes, also claimed to have achieved record-breaking sales at the October show. Over the years, the range grew and by 2017, comprised 10 layouts, from the two-berth Seville to the big Cordoba. AS TOWING VEHICLES, pick-ups have some clear pros and cons. On the one hand, they’re heavy and usually have very high legal towing limits. Go for a double-cab and you have two rows of seats, making your truck a viable alternative to a family car. On the other, however, pick-ups typically have tough but fairly crude rear suspension, which can’t provide the firm control and stability that you will find in the best SUVs, for towing or solo driving. The front kitchen returns After an absence of a good decade or so, front-kitchen caravans were on display once again at the NEC. Adria has added to its upmarket Alpina line-up with the Rio Grande (pictured below left). Based on the Astella from years gone by, this includes just such a front kitchen. You also get a central lounge with an L-shaped settee ideal for TV viewing. This converts into a bed to provide extra sleeping spaces, and there’s a transverse island bed in front of the rear washroom, which feels very much like an en suite. I SUSPECT MANY of you, like me, have completed a journey towing the caravan that was accompanied by groaning sounds emanating from the rear of the car every time you turned a corner, especially when travelling at slow speed. How could a company with “grace, space and pace” as its ethos possibly make a success of an off-roader? Then people drove the car, and found that it was actually rather good. It was (and still is) a good tow car, too. Emboldened, Jaguar decided to further strengthen its SUV position by making a smaller one, called the E-Pace. What is a battery? In the simplest terms, a battery is just a plastic box full of electricity. All caravans will have at least one battery, but some have two or more. When you are using your van, the main way your leisure battery will be charged is if you are on site and plugged into a hook-up, when it will be topped up by the mains charger fitted as standard in all modern tourers. But to keep your batteries in optimal condition, you really need high-quality charging. Install a solar panel Adding a solar panel (p68) is a no-brainer if your caravan is stored outside. Think about the automotive technologies offering particular benefit in towing a caravan, and you’ll have quite a long list. Prejudice and personal taste can skew the priorities, as well as environmental factors. But being purely subjective, we should look at the diesel engine, or more specifically, the recent diesel engine - its advantages have grown and its pollution levels plummeted. Diesel’s inherent advantages over petrol are numerous. For a start, it burns a given amount of fuel more efficiently for the outputs achieved, and hence its superior mpg. It is inherently ‘lean burn’, resulting in lower Co2, and its higher cylinder compression ratio gives it better low-rpm torque characteristics. Reducing emissions The big downside, of course, is the question of particulate emissions, but ever-tightening regulations mean this is now greatly…

I’LL WAGER YOU’VE never really given the graphics that adorn your caravan a second thought, apart from possibly musing, “That looks nice,” or something similar. And what about the various warning markers, such as those on the gas lockers and so on, or VIN numbers, which these days are printed, rather than being stamped metal plates?
